In humble submission to the will of God, the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. and members of the Jones Family, sadly announce the earthly departure of Reverend Sammie Jones, husband of Mrs. Olivia Green Jones. Early Friday morning, September 29, 2023, God saw fit to end this tedious journey of Reverend Sammie Jones and provide him eternal rest from the trials of this old world.
For we are reminded in Psalm 55:6, " Oh that I had wings like a dove, for then would I fly away and be at rest. For we know that God's servant, the Reverend Sammie Jones is simply resting in the bosom of the Lord.
Celebration of Life is 2:30PM on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Flat Creek Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Round O Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
Public viewing will be from 12 Noon to 6:00pm on Friday, October 6, 2023 in the chapel.
OBITUARY
“For now, I am ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith, henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.” II Timothy 4:6-8
Reverend Sammie Lee Jones was born on December 10, 1937 to Emmett and Eula May Willoughby Jones, the second of eight children in Darlington County, South Carolina. At the early age of 12 years old, he accepted JESUS as his LORD & SAVIOR and was baptized at Round O Missionary Baptist Church, Darlington, SC. On September 29, 2023, after a long illness, JESUS called him home to his eternal rest.
Sammie attended school in Darlington County until he moved to New Haven, Connecticut in 1958 and it was there he received his GED High School Diploma. In 1988 -1989, he received Certificates in Biblical Studies from Logos Bible College. In 1990, he received a Bachelor of Biblical Studies from Vision Christian University. Sammie also attended Southern New England Regional Bible School receiving a Bachelors in Bible Studies and then taught there for two years. While living in Connecticut Sammie worked for B. F. Goodrich and for Pratt & Whitney Aerospace Company for many years. He also met and after courting her married Olivia Green on April 20, 2000. They have enjoyed a wonderful marriage for 23 years and she was there by his side until the end.
Sammie was a man of service and dedicated his life to serving GOD. No matter what the conversation was about Reverend Jones always ended the conversation talking about the word of GOD. If you gave him your ear, he would teach you a few things. In Connecticut, Reverend Sammie Jones joined The First Church of GOD where he was an Associate Pastor, sang on the male choir, and taught Sunday School. After many years of service there, GOD called him to be Pastor of Unity Church of GOD. Again, after many years, GOD moved him to become Pastor of New Jerusalem Church of GOD in Bridgeport, Connecticut for 7 years. Reverend Sammie Jones and his wife relocated back to Darlington, SC in 2004. He rejoined Round O Baptist Church where he served for many years as an associate pastor, bible study teacher, sang on men’s choir, and worked with the prison ministry. Sammie then joined Flat Creek Baptist Church and was ordain in January 2014 by the Saint John Baptist Association. He served and was a member until his death. At Flat Creek he served as Associate Minister, sang on the men ’s choir, and taught four bible study classes a week. One at the Darlington County Council on Aging building. He also had a men’s bible study and did marriage counseling. Sammie was also a S.C. Notary for ten years (2010 -2020). Reverend Sammie Jones loved his community and cared about others. He received several certificates and acknowledgements of appreciation through the years from: Southern Poverty Law Center, Fatherhood & Families Engagement Program (2007 & 2008), Boys Town (2011), and “Wall of Tolerance” in Montgomery, Alabama where his name is a part of.
Sammie was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett and Eula May Jones; two brothers, Ashton & Herbert Jones; and one son, Sammie Reginald Jones.
Those left to cherish his memory are: his wife -Olivia Green Jones, Darlington, SC; three brothers: Emmett Jr. (Jennie) -Texas, Edward -Connecticut; Wade (Carrie) -Connecticut. Two sisters: Nora (Alexander) Lacks -Connecticut and Johnnie Green -Connecticut. His children: Lorenzo -NY, Felicia (Anthony) -PA, Giri – FL, Roderick -NY, Amelia -MD, Corey (Myra) -Conn., Kyle -Conn., Darryl -NY, and Tia Washington -NC.; two brothers-in-law: Raymond "Jack" Green and Sammie "Brother" Green, both of Darlington, SC; a sister-in-law, Rebecca Jones; a host of grandchildren, great -grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other family members & friends.
Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the residence, 108 S. Williamson Park Drive, Darlington.
