Reverend Larry Scipio, Sr. Obituary

It is with heartfelt condolences that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. and members of the Scipio family announces the transition of Reverend Larry Scipio, Sr. Reverend Scipio transitioned on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 24, 2022 at his residence following an illness. 

Funeral service is 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at Faith Memorial Gardens. Interment will follow. 

 

Obituary

 

     “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”

                                                                                                                         II Timothy 4: 7-8

 

     Reverend Larry Scipio, Sr. was born in Darlington, South Carolina on October 23, 1945 a son of the late Belton Scipio, Jr. and Ida Mae Jett Scipio.  He entered into his eternal rest on Thursday, November 24, 2022 at his residence. 

 

     He received his formal education in the Darlington County Public School graduating from Mayo High School Class of 1966.  While in high school, he played football and was a member of Mayo Block M Club. After graduating, he moved to New Jersey where he met and married his best friend, Hattie McClendon Scipio. This union was blessed with seven children.

 

     While in New Jersey, he was gainfully employed. Later, he moved his family to Darlington, South Carolina where he was employed at Bilo as a Floor Monitor, he was an employee of Bethea Baptist Home and also an Entrepreneur throughout Darlington, SC. Reverend Scipio was an Ordained minister and was the pastor of Black Creek Baptist Church, Pageland, SC for a number of years. He was the founder of Community Baptist Church, Darlington, SC where he pastored for many years.  After pastoring for a number of years, he joined Union Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend William Pierce.

 

     Those who shared the joys and sorrows of life with him and survived to cherish his memory are:  his six loving children:  Janice (Thomas) McNeil of Paterson, NJ, Bryant (Sharon) Scipio, Keith McClendon, Larry Scipio, Jr., Kenyatta Scipio all of Darlington, SC and Katina M. (Joseph) Jenkins of Atlanta, GA; a special granddaughter he reared in the home, Taquaila McClendon; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; five sisters: Eva Mae Evans, Blessie Wilson, Ann Scipio all of Darlington, SC, Bessie (John) Newell of Washington, DC and Lisa Kelley of Fairmont, NC; one brother, Roosevelt Scipio of Florence, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, cousins, other relatives and friends.

 

      He was preceded in death by: his parents: Belton Scipio and Ida M. Scipio; his wife, Hattie Scipio; his daughter, Faith Scipio and a brother, Woodrow Scipio.

 Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the residence, 100 Springfield Apt 17B.
