It is with profound sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Ms. Shirley Ann DeWitt of Columbia, SC, formally of Darlington, SC. Ms. DeWitt expired Friday morning, August 14, 2020 in a Columbia hospital.
Funeral service is 11:00 AM on Friday, August 21, 2020 in Hoodfield Cemetery, Abbott Road, Darlington. Interment will follow. Please adhere to mask wearing and social distancing.

Miss Shirley Ann Dewitt was 1 of 14 children born to the late Nathaniel and Louise Dewitt in Florence, SC. She departed this life on Friday, August 14, 2020 in Prisma Health Richland in Columbia, SC.
She received her formal education in the Darlington County Public School System graduating from St. John’s High School, Darlington, SC Class of 1975. Her career began in Florence, SC working as a production specialist with GE; while completing her marketing degree. In 1985, she moved to Columbia, SC to which other family members later followed. While residing in Columbia, she became employed in various entertainment arenas. In 2003, she relocated to Asheville, NC where she resided and worked for the next 5 years. In her later years up until 2020, Shirley dedicated over a decade of service as an educator for Richland School District One in Columbia, SC.
Shirley loved her family and enjoyed traveling to various Beaches. She was an avid shopper with a vibrant and colorful sense of style, which reflected her personality! She enjoyed cooking and eating good food. She was a fierce, courageous, trail blazer who made a positive impact on her family and the people around her.
She is preceded in death by her Father, Nathaniel Dewitt Sr.; her Mother, Louise Dewitt; baby sister, Dicey Mae Dewitt and her brother, Nathaniel Dewitt, Jr.
Left to cherish her memory, she leaves behind: the love of her life, Bernard Murphy; four sisters: Ida M Gregg (James Gregg) of Columbia, SC, Rebecca Dewitt of Columbia, SC, Gloria King of Columbia, SC and Minister Cynthia Roary of Florence, SC; seven brothers: Willie Barr (Willie Mae Barr) of Long Island, New York, Joseph Dewitt (Louvenia Dewitt) of Loris, SC, Hilton Dewitt of Darlington, SC, Roosevelt Dewitt of Florence, SC, Melvin Dewitt of Columbia, SC, Johnnie Dewitt of Columbia, SC and Thomas Dewitt of Vacaville, CA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation for relatives and friends will be at the residence of a sister, Cynthia Dewitt Roary of 1029 Middleton Street, Florence.
