Josephine Wright’s Story

“For now I am ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand.  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith, henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.”            ~ II Timothy 4:6:8

A Time to be Born: Ecclesiastes 3:2

Josephine Wright’s story began on November 22, 1935, in Darlington, South Carolina.  She was the ninth child of Elmore and Euron Thomas Wright.

A Time to Die:  Ecclesiastes 3:2

Josephine’s journey ended peacefully in her home in Timmonsville, South Carolina.

Train up a child in the way he should go: Proverbs 22:6

Josephine was reared in a large family which included 11 children.  The family loved the Lord, and they loved singing.  They attended Cherry Grove Baptist Church and later transferred their attendance to Lee Street First Church of God.  As a child Josephine attended Cherry Grove Elementary School and later Mayo High School.  It was a long trek to Mayo each day from the Cherry Grove Community.  Luckily, a bus was finally provided for the African American students, so she was able to ride the bus to and from school for her last two years of high school.

After she graduated from Mayo High School, she left Darlington.  She said she took only what she could carry in her two hands.  She lived and worked, for a while, in New York and eventually settled in Hartford, Connecticut.  In Hartford she worked as an insurance analyst in the home office of Aetna Life Insurance Company for 30 years before retiring.

While in Hartford, she maintained close ties with her siblings who lived nearby.  Every holiday would see them enjoying dinners together where there was always laughing, joking, and eating.  Aunt Jo was a favorite of her many nieces and nephews.  When she decided to retire and move back to South Carolina, one of them remarked, “there goes our ribs.”  She cooked the most delicious ribs.  While in South Carolina, her Christmas gift to each family here was a pan of her scrumptious ribs.

Aunt Jo enjoyed traveling and visited many exotic places.

During her retirement, she sang with the Cherry Grove School Alumni Choir.  She enjoyed gardening and was often seen working in her front yard.  She also loved to host dinners for family and friends.  During family reunions, her family enjoyed meeting at her home to eat and to practice for the family’s Sunday program.  She was always loving and gracious.

A Time to weep and mourn:  Ecclesiastes 3:4

After 87 years on this earth, our Aunt Jo has embraced the next level of eternal life.  She is the last of Elmore’s and Euron’s children to enter eternity and with her passing, a generation of the Wright family passes away.  She was preceded in death by her siblings:  Ravenel Wright, Ernestine Wright Josey, Norman Wright, Welton Wright, Sr., Thomasena Wright Weaver, Johnny Wright, Ethel Wright Van Allen, Capitola Wright Meyers, Harold Wright, Alphonso Wright and James “Sonny” Wright.

Aunt Jo never married but leaves a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and other relatives and friends.  She was a lady of great dignity and peace.  We remember her with much love.

Please keep the Wright family in your thoughts and prayers.
