It is with heartfelt sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home Inc. and members of the Murray Family announce the transition from labor to reward for Ms. Evelyn Vernita Murray of Florence, SC. Ms. Murray transitioned early Thursday morning, October 28, 2021 in the Medical University of South Carolina-Florence campus from an illness.
Celebration of Life is 12 Noon Wednesday, November 3, 2021 on the Grounds of Round O Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Faith Memorial Gardens. Please adhere to mask wearing and social distancing for this service.
Life’s Reflections
“For now I am ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith, henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.” II Timothy 4:6-8
Ms. Evelyn Vernita Murray entered her eternal home early Thursday morning, October 28, 2021 after enduring a long illness. Evelyn, daughter of the late Joseph Mark Murray, Sr. and the late Ruth Grace Williams Murray, was born on June 3rd, 1949 in Darlington, SC. She grew up in the Round O Missionary Baptist Church and received her salvation under that ministry.
She completed her early elementary and middle school education in the Darlington County School System and graduated from Mayo High School Class of 1967. After high school, she left her home of South Carolina and ventured to New York. She began working at Dreyfus Corporation in 1968 and worked there for 15 years.
In 1979, Evelyn was joined in marriage to the late George Penniston and from that union had two daughters: Ina and Ruth Penniston.
She returned home to SC in 1984 and in 1989 began working at ESAB Welding and Cutting formerly known as Union Carbide/L-TEC. She worked there for twenty years and retired in 2009 due to health issues.
Evelyn served faithfully at Round O Missionary Baptist Church. She taught the Adult Sunday School Class for many years. She also served on the Mass Choir, Usher Board and Missionary Ministry until her health declined. She was also a member of the Woman's Pee Dee District Department, Cluster #3 where she assisted in teaching Bible Studies. She was certified as a teacher by the Christian Education Department of the Pee Dee Baptist Association.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Joseph M. Murray, Sr. and Ruth G. Murray; two siblings: Lorraine Murray and Josephine Gregg and one niece, Joanne Gregg.
Those left to cherish precious memories of Evelyn are: her daughters: Ina A. Penniston and Ruth J. Penniston both of Darlington, SC; four grandchildren: Toddrick K. Penniston, Kaleb D. Penniston, Tiffani K. Penniston and Tamara K. Penniston all of Darlington, SC; five siblings: Rufus (Grace) Murray of Bennettsville, SC, Joseph Murray, Jr., Annie L. Murray,., and James Alford all of Darlington, SC, and Eddie Green of NC; a special brother, Robert (Sophia) Gregg, Jr. of Darlington; one aunt, Hattie W. Thorpe of Greenville, SC; a special niece, Lauralee (Quentin) Davis of Darlington, SC; a special son and daughter, Lionell A. and Lakeisha Cribb of Darlington, SC; a special church sister, Virginia Perkins; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation is held at the residence of a daughter, Minister Ina Penniston, 1644 Elissa Drive (off Society Hill Road), Darlington.
