Mrs. Virginia Thomas Harkless Obituary

It is with heartfelt sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. and members of the Thomas/Harkless families share the peaceful transition of Mrs. Virginia Thomas Harkless of Darlington, SC.  Mrs. Harkless transition on Friday, March 17, 2023 at McLeod Hospice House, Florence following an illness. 

Celebration of Life will be 12 Noon on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 in Round O Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. M.A. McMillan, Sr., officiating.  Interment will follow. 

“The Lord is my light and salvation, whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the strength on my life; of whom shall I be afraid.”   Psalm 27:1

     Ms. Virginia Thomas Harkless, also known as “Gin” was born in Darlington County on June 1, 1949, a daughter of the late Pearline Thomas and Jerome Smith.  On Friday morning, March 17, 2023, God sent His Angel to get His daughter to carry her to her heavenly home for eternal rest.

     “Gin” received formal education in the Darlington County Public School System and graduated from Rosenwald High School, Class of 1969.  “Gin” was employed in Darlington County and retired after 27 years with Dixie Cup. 

     At an early age, she was baptized and joined Round O Baptist Church. 

     Those left to cherish her memories are: her daughter, Amy Collins of the home;  her sons: Johnny Christopher (Ernnessa) Harkless of the home and Tony (Sabrina) Harkless of Darlington, SC; five grandchildren:  Jeremy (Shanetta) Harkless, Avery Harkless, Tanija Brown, and Quaneisha Harkless and a granddaughter reared in home, Ariane Harkless; seven great-grandchildren: Chloe White, Cayden Mack, Braxton Robinson, Eathan Hardaway, Calina Hardaway, Taylan Williams and Harmony Harkless; brothers: Kenneth (Doris) Hamilton of Lamar, SC; George (Linda) Lowery of Florence, SC, and Stephen (Twila) Lowery of Hartsville, SC; Sisters : Mary Blanchett of Mt. Clemens, MI, Annette (Dwight) Nettles of Summerville, SC, Minister Eula Pack, Patricia Thomas, and Lizzie (Walter) Williamson all of Darlington, SC; a sister-in-law, Ellen Thomas; a brother-in-law, Tommy Lee Bush; one uncle, Jack Thomas of Darlington, SC; a special niece, Cindy Taylor of Darlington, SC; special friends: Ms. Jackie Jett, Janie Dundy, Donna Smalls, and Jennie Holloman; a host of nieces, nephews, close relatives and friends who regret her passing. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Pearline T. (James) Coe, Jerome Smith; aunts, Marie T. Lowery and Azalee Thomas, sisters: Lois "Sissy" Collins, Helen "Sister" Harkless, Ruby Lee Bush, Beatrice Addison, and Eva Lee "Doll Baby" Lowery; brothers, Robert "Sonny" Lowery and Deacon John Henry Thomas. 

Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Sabrina Harkless, 1560 Remount Road, Darlington.
