Mrs. Virginia “Mamagal” Roberts

August 5, 1940 ~ August 16, 2020 (age 80)

It is with deepest sympathy that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the transition from labor to reward for Mrs. Virginia Roberts of Darlington. Mrs. Roberts transitioned on Sunday, August 16, 2020 in a Florence Hospital.

Funeral service will be 12 noon on Saturday, August 22, 2020 in Backus-Bacote Cemetery, Drew Drive, Darlington. Interment will follow.  Please adhere to social distancing and mask wearing. 


“For now I am ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand.  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith, henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.”

    Mrs. Virginia Moses Roberts was born on August 5, 1940 in Darlington, South Carolina a daughter of the late Maybelle Moses Capers and Jim Pierce.  She departed this life on Sunday, August 16, 2020 at MUSC Health Medical Center, Florence, SC.

    She received her formal education in the Darlington County Public School System.

    She was a member of Monumental Baptist Church where she served as a Senior Missionary.

  Virginia was employed at Thomasville Furniture Industries for many years. Later, she returned back to her hometown, Darlington.

   “Mamagal”, as she was affectionately called by family and friends, loved cooking, shopping, gardening, arts & crafts.  She will be missed by all who loved and knew her.

    She was preceded in death by: her daughter, Shirley “Cheryl” A. Brown; her husband, Wallace Roberts; her siblings: Leroy Moses and Willie Capers.

    Those left to cherish her memory are:  her son, Willie Brown, Jr. of the home; her five daughters: Letha Hart, Wilma (Tony) Dorsey both of Thomasville, ND, Mary (Roger) Moore of Greensboro, NC, Bertha (Chris) Gray and Diana Brown both of Darlington, SC; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-eight great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; her siblings: Marie Littlejohn, Bertha Boston, Julia McNeil, Smiley Carpers, Herman McIver, Marshall (Jessie) McIver, Evangelist Mable Mack and Charles (Shirley) Capers; a special friend, Kathleen Walker, a special sister-in-law, Margaret McIver; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, a large church family and friends.

Visitation will be held at the residence, 116 Harper Drive, Darlington.
