Obituary

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”    ~II Timothy 4:7

Selma Lois James Robinson was born on May 15th 1932, the second child of the late Robert L. James and Menera Greene James. She entered into eternal rest on Friday, February 18th, 2022 at her residence.

Selma received her formal education in the Darlington County Schools and graduated from Mayo High School. Following high school, she attended and graduated from Benedict College in Columbia, S.C. and began teaching at Pamplico High School which was later named Gibbs High School. It was there that she met her future husband, Roosevelt “Jack” Robinson. They married on December 26, 1956 and shortly thereafter moved to Camden, New Jersey where they remained for 33 years.

Selma was a longtime educator in the Philadelphia School System at Kearney Elementary School. She was an outstanding teacher and mentor who was beloved by her students. She cared for them as if they were her own children. Selma received numerous awards from the school district in recognition of her dedication and commitment to teaching.

Upon retirement, the family moved back to South Carolina. Although she was retired, she was incredibly busy doing all of the things that she loved. The most important of which was caring for her mother, Menera Williams until her death in 1997. Selma loved her church. She found lifelong joy in singing, directing choirs, directing church programs and caring for her family and others in the community.

Selma was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Roosevelt “Jack” Robinson; her parents, Robert L. James and Menera Greene James Williams and her stepfather, Charles Williams; three siblings: Ruby L. Fuller, Joseph “Billy” James, Shirley J. Sheares.

Those who remain to cherish her memory and honor her legacy include: her son, Leonard (Crystal) Robinson; 2 grandchildren: Leonard Robinson, Jr. and LaNise Robinson; 3 great-grandchildren: Antwan, Jr., Peyton and Londyn, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and many siblings raised by her mother. She transitioned peacefully in the loving care of her great-niece, Robynn Stembridge.
