Mrs. Sarah Laverne Reese Lucas

It is with sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Mrs. Sarah Laverne Reese Lucas of Florence, formally of Darlington.  Mrs. Lucas passed on Friday, November 24, 2023 in a Florence nursing facility. 

Private funeral service is 10:00Am on Monday, November 27, 2023 in the Chapel of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc.  Interment will follow in the Darlington Memorial Cemetery, D. Avenue, Darlington. 

Sarah LaVerne Lucas, 91, was born August 12, 1932, in Richmond, Virginia. She was affectionately known as LaVerne. On November 24, 2023, she departed this life. Laverne was the daughter of Joseph and Evelyn Reese of Richmond, Virginia, who preceded her in death.

She was baptized at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Richmond, Virginia and received Jesus Christ as her savior at an early age. She was a graduate of Armstrong High School, Richmond Virginia and aained her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education (B.S.Ed.) from Virginia State University. Laverne was a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. Her passion for children led her to pursue a vocation in early childhood education and development. She was a professional educator and spent decades overseeing learning environments and administering instruction to children in an elementary setting in Richmond, Virginia and Darlington, South Carolina.

On April 25, 1970, Laverne joined in marriage to James Lucas and relocated to Darlington, South Carolina. She had many interests and fervently enjoyed dancing, art, music, and family. She resided at the Commander Nursing Center, Florence, South Carolina, at the time of her passing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Jerome Lucas; son, Donald Lucas; parents, Joseph and Evelyn Reese; and Brother-in-Law, Dr. Frederick Peagler.

She is survived by her sister; Dr. Joyce Reese-Peagler; cousins, Evelyn Patricia Brown (Charles), Anne Clark (Donald), Brenda Scott, James Patterson (Rose), Michael Patterson (Mary) and other family and friends.
