It is with heartfelt condolences that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Mrs. Sarah Harris Bess of Darlington, SC that passed on Monday night, January 10, 2022 in a Hartsville hospital following an illness.
Funeral service is 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at Faith Memorial Gardens. Interment will follow. Please adhere to mask wearing and social distancing for this service.

Mrs. Sarah “Rabbit” Janie Harris Bess was born in New Bern, North Carolina on March 12, 1944, a daughter of the late Ezekiel Harris and Sarah Phillips. She departed this life on Monday, January 10, 2022 at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center,Hartsville, South Carolina.
She was employed at DuPont where she retired after 24 years of service. She was also an exceptional seamstress.
Sarah “Rabbit” Janie H Bess was united in marriage to the late Mr. Hazel Bess.
Preceding her in death the late Mr. James Roberts Jones; two siblings: Ida Ruth Grady, Elder Wealthly Hargett and her late daughter, Themossa Jeniece Jones.
“Rabbit”, as she was affectionately called by her family and friends, was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend. She loved singing, cooking, fishing, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Sarah will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Those left to cherish her memory are: three children: Anthony (Pearley) Ray Jones, Deborah Wise and Michelle (Don) Adams; two siblings: Betty Grady and Jerry Phillips; fifteen grandchildren: Tochelle Jones, Corrina (Arnesha) Duncan, Sharee Peterson, Anthony Jones, Jr. aka ShawnPo, Tiffany (Robert) White, Kemo (Meesa) Jones, Da’Sean Jones, Yuri McAllister, Sarah (Fedrick) Williams, Mariea (Nicolas) Corbett, Monica Lowe, Dekia Harkless, Themossa Brockington, Destin Russell, and Joseph Gilliam; twenty-nine great grandchildren; a host of adopted children and grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; a special friend, Prince Daniel Anyanwu.
