“Life’s Reflections”

“With long life will I satisfy him and shew him my salvation.” (Psalm 91:16)

Mattie McRavin Bacote was a sweet, gentle, caring soul. Her altruistic spirit led her to a life of service in the medical profession at an early age. Nursing was not a job but a calling for Mattie. Whether serving patients at the offices of Dr. Coleman, Aimar or later at Palmetto Center, she ALWAYS performed her duties with love, tenderness, and a high level of excellence. The career that began in her teenage years was sustained by continuing education throughout it. Her commitment to education kept her current, compassionate, and able to provide the best care possible for her patients, graduating from Florence-Darlington Technical College and Francis Marion with a degree in Nursing and Pharmacology.

Born the third eldest child of Oliver McRavin, Sr. and Bernetha Robinson McRavin on the 3rd of May 1930 in Darlington County. She spent many years under the tutelage of her grandmother Dora. Growing up in a Christian home, she developed a strong interpersonal relationship with God and dedicated her life to Christ at an early age in New Providence Baptist Church of Mechanicsville and later at Salem Baptist Church where she met the love of her life. Mattie married and became the help mate of Hammond Bacote. Together they would build their lives for over 60 years until his passing in 2012. They were a couple of prominence and inspiration in the community.

Mattie was a diligent worker, dedicated to her profession until physical limitations prevented her from doing so. But there was more to Mattie than work. She enjoyed nature, gardening, taking walks through town and baking. She had a love for animals, from domestic to exotic. She shared her wisdom, faith, and love with her family until the end. She stayed committed and faithful to the God who was committed and faithful to her.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her brother, Oliver “Doc” (Ruby) McRavin, Jr of Darlington; sisters: Bernice M. Alford of Brooklyn, New York; Blanch M. Bacote and Ethel M. Reaves both of Darlington.

Mattie heard the call and took her Lord and Savior’s hand on Wednesday, January 24th joining the angels and elders of old in a paradise free of pain and fully restored. She is again united with parents, siblings Arthur McRavin, Mary Elizabeth Jackson, Annie Mae Exum, Dora C. Wade and Thomas McRavin and her love, Hammond Bacote.
