It is with profound sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Mrs. Mary People Burris of Lamar, SC. Mrs. Burris transitioned on early Tuesday morning, May 6, 2020 in a Columbia nursing facility.
The family of Mrs. Mary Peoples Burris in consideration of the current health crisis facing our world, nation, state and local community, would love to be surrounded by your presence. They acknowledge the health risks to family, church members, friends, and particularly to those who are most vulnerable to this disease, the elderly and those with chronic health conditions and ask that those who attend the service ensure you are wearing masks and practice social distancing. Graveside service will be 2:00pm on Sunday, May 10, 2020 at Sandy Grove United Methodist Church, Lamar. Interment will follow immediately.

“For now I am ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith, henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.” II Timothy 4:6-8
Mrs. Mary Burris was born in Lamar, South Carolina on July 16, 1926 a daughter of the late McKinley and Ada Peoples Peoples. She entered into her final resting place on Wednesday, May 6, 2020 at White Oaks Manor in Columbia, South Carolina.
She received her formal education in the Florence County Public Schools (Timmonsville) and furthered education at Allen University and Benedict College in Columbia, SC where she majored in Education. After graduating from college she was employed as a teacher in the Lee County School District where she retired after more than 70 years.
Mrs. Burris was a life member of Sandy Grove United Methodist Church where she served as Communion Steward, United Methodist Women Auxiliary and any other capacity as needed.
Mary was united in marriage to the later Mr. Roosevelt “Boy” Burris on December 27, 1951 and together she reared four daughters and several nieces.
She was a very loving and caring mother who touched the lives of many children who came her way.
Those who shared the joys of her life and survived to cherish her memory are: four daughters: Mary Lee (James) Bacote, Marjorie Simmons, Betty Davis all of Columbia, SC and Betty J. (Eddie) Hampton of Timmonsville, SC; her sister, Girlene Peoples Mixon of Columbia, SC; her brother, William (Catherine) Peoples of Lamar, SC; two grandsons; Travis Hampton and Derrick Hampton; two special nieces: Carolyn (Eugene, Sr.) Simuel of Gadsden, SC and Gerthina Mixon of Columbia, SC; her brothers-in-law: Felix (Mae) Burris of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Arthur Kennedy of Columbia, SC and James Marshall (Joann) Burris of Lamar, SC; two sister-in-law, Conree Kirkland of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Mary Peoples of Timmonsville, SC; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
