With heartfelt sympathy, Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc., and members of the Wright family announce the passing of Mrs. Mary Alice McLeod Wright of Darlington, SC. Mrs. Wright transitioned Thursday, September 11, 2025, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence, SC.

The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Alberta McLeod Wright, 1530 Allegheny Ridge, Florence, SC.

Public viewing will be held 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc., 612 S Main St, Darlington, SC.

Funeral service will be held 10:00 AM, Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at Lawson Grove Baptist Church, 3585 Lawson Grove Church Rd, Hartsville, SC. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Obituary

Mrs. Mary Alice McLeod Wright, 73, of Darlington, South Carolina, entered into her eternal rest on Wednesday, September 11, 2025, at McLeod Hospice House, Florence, SC.

   She was born on September 13, 1951, in Darlington, SC the beloved daughter of the late Cleveland McLeod, Sr. and Calperta Johnson McLeod.  

    She received her formal education in the Darlington County Public Schools where she was a proud graduate of Mayo High School, Class of 1969, and went on to lead a life filled with service, style and strength. Mary Alice worked for many years as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Cook and Cosmetologist, touching countless lives with her care and creativity.

   A lifelong member of Lawson Grove Baptist Church in Hartsville, SC, she served faithfully as President of the Usher’s Ministry and was active in both the Women’s Fellowship Committee and the Missionary Committee. Her warmth, leadership, and unwavering faith left a lasting mark on the church she loved.

   She was preceded in death by: her husband, Robert Wright; her brothers: Ronnie McLeod, Sr. and James Edward McLeod.

  Mary Alice is survived by: her loving sons, Melvin Wright of Florence, SC and Robert Wright of Darlington, SC; grandchildren Melvanique Wright, Davon Bess, Niiesha Grant, Damone Martin and A’Nyah Martin; and great-granddaughter,Zuri Grant; her siblings: Cleveland McLeod, Jr. (Shirley†) of Darlington, SC, Alberta Wright (SFC John M. Wright, U.S. Army, deceased) of Florence, SC, Preston McLeod (Linda) of Darlington, Paul McLeod of Lorain, OH, Terry Cummings (Dr. Gerald Cummings) of McDonough, GA, and Shelia Samuel of Darlington, SC; her sister-in-law, Rosa McLeod; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, especially her lifelong best friend, Jackie Muldrow.

     Her light lives on in all who loved her.
