It is with sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. and members of the Samuel and Black families announce the transition of Mrs. Mae Belle Samuel Black of Darlington. Mrs. Black entered eternal rest on Thursday, October 19, 2023 at a Florence hospital following an illness. 

Funeral service is 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at Palmetto Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Cherry Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. 

 

Obituary

Mrs. Mae Belle Samuel Black was born in Raeford, North Carolina on August 1, 1938, a daughter of the late Ishmael Samuel and Lula Bell McGuinn Samuel. She departed this earthly life on Thursday, October 19, 2023 at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence, SC.

She received her formal education in the Darlington County Public Schools System.

In May 1958, she was united in holy matrimony to the late  Sam“Buddy” Black, Jr. and from this union they were blessed with six children. 

She was employed as a machine operator for Nytronics for five years and was also a faithful housewife, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. 

Mrs. Mae Belle Black was a lifelong member of Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she served as a member of the Pastor’s Aide. 

Mae Belle was a boisterous, fun-loving person who loved her “Stories” and was always cooking something in the kitchen. Her specialty in the kitchen were her biscuits while her nut bread for Christmas was a special treat. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. 

Those left to cherish her memory are: her son, Rochelle (Carolyn) Black of Darlington, SC; two daughters: Josephine Black of Florence, SC and Joanne (Carey) Williamson of Darlington, SC; 24 grandchildren which includes:  Rochelle F. Black, Jr., Rachel Black, Fulton Williamson, Tonetha (Ronnie) Sawyer, Carey L. Jr. (the late Victoria) Williamson, Myasheya S. Dubose, LaKeshia Jones, Marcus Carter, Amy Hawkins, Ciera Black and Angel (Kevin) Livingston; 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Hattie Samuel Isaac of Cheraw, SC; five specialsisters-in-law, Sarah Sims of Washington, DC, Fannie Mae Bacote of Ansonia, CT, Lula Mae Black of Dillon, SC, Linda Jordan of Darlington, SC and Angela Washington of Florence, SC; special cousin, Margarene (Buck) Harrison of Lapata, MD; special friend, Gloria Johnson of Darlington, SC;

a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband and three children: Jerry Black, Terry Black, and Sammie Lee Samuel; and four siblings: David, Mary, Alma, and Magdalene.
