It is with profound sorrow that Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Mrs. Judy Furlow of Darlington. Mrs. Furlow passed on Friday, June 09, 2023 at her residence surrounded by her loving family following an extended illness.
Funeral service is 10:00am on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at Tabernacle Worship Center. Interment will follow in New Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery.

“For now I am ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith, henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.” II Timothy 4:6-8
Mrs. Judy Swinney Furlow, the daughter of the late Evander and Rosa Lee Smith Swinney, was born on June 11, 1942 in Darlington, South Carolina. She transitioned to the next life on Friday, June 09, 2023 at her residence following an extended illness.
Judy attended Rosenwald High School in Society Hill, South Carolina. She birthed four children: Tony, Belinda, Edwina, and Denise. She was married to the late Reverend Lee Otis Furlow and became the first lady of Tabernacle Congregation of God in Baltimore, Maryland.
Judy was employed for many years as a Chef in Baltimore, Maryland until she relocated back to South Carolina.
Mother Judy served as a Pastor Aid Member and President of the Usher Board while in Baltimore. When Judy retired, she moved back to South Carolina and joined the Tabernacle Worship Center in Darlington under the leadership of Apostle Charlie Johnson. While in South Carolina, she served as the President of the Pastor’s Aid and was one of the mothers of the church.
Surviving to cherish the memory and maintain the legacy of Mother Judy Furlow are her loving children: a son, Tony Swinney of Baltimore, Maryland; daughters: Belinda Simon of the home, Rose B. (Larry) Jones of Darlington, SC, and Denise Simon of Camden, New Jersey; one brother, Henry Swinney of Darlington, SC; one grandson, Elliot (Tia) Simon of Baltimore, Maryland; seven great grands; three great-great grands; a godson, James Pugh of Baltimore, Maryland; a special nephew she took as her own, Minister Sidney (Peter Rabbit) Swinney of Baltimore, Maryland; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends that she loved.
Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the residence, 1504 Millwood Drive, Darlington.
