Mrs. Jannie Mae Mack Bruce Obituary

With heartfelt sympathy, the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc., and members of the Bruce family announce the passing of Mrs. Jannie Mae Mack Bruce of Florence, SC. Mrs. Bruce transitioned Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at Medical University of South Carolina-Florence in Florence, SC.

The family will be receiving friends Monday, August 4th through Wednesday, August 6th, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM daily at the residence of a daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Steven Gordon, 4027 Westbrook Drive, Florence, SC.

Public viewing will be 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Thursday, April 7, 2025, at Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc., 612 S Main St, Darlington, SC.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM, Friday, August 8, 2025, at Lee St Church of God, 222 Lee St, Darlington, SC. Interment will follow at 1:00 PM, United States National Cemetery - Florence, 803 National Cemetery Rd, Florence, SC.

Obituary

   “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”  II Timothy 4:6-8

        Mrs. Jannie Mae Bruce was born in Darlington, SC on May 23, 1934, a daughter of the late Sylvester “Fad” Mack and Lillie Lee Stevenson Mack. At the tender age of five, Jannie’s birth mother died and her father married the late Ethel Lee Moses Sansbury, who Jannie affectionally called “Ma.”

    Mrs. Bruce received her formal education in the Darlington County Public Schools. 

    In the spring of 1958, Mrs. Bruce met and married the “love of her life”, Mr. Norman Bruce of Darlington, SC. Shortly after marriage, they relocated to Liberty, New York, where they attended Church of God In Christ. After spending several years in Liberty, NY, they relocated to The Bronx, NY where she worked as a Dietary Assistant for the New York City Board of Education for 26 years.

    She was a member of The Greater Faith Baptist Church, Bronx, NY where she participated in several ministries, including serving as a Deaconess, President of the PictorialAide, member of the Missionary Ministry and being involved in Outreach Ministries. After retiring, they relocated to their birthplace of Darlington, SC, and continued serving the Lord faithfully at the Lee Street Church of God where she served as a Missionary Society, member of the Sanctuary Choir and any capacity that was needed.

    She leaves in her passing: five daughters: Margaree M. Glen, Janice Hoyte (Michael) of Freeport, NY, Janette Bruce Ortiz ofBrooklyn, NY, Norma Bruce-Addo of Bronx, NY and Joan Gordon (Steven) of Florence, SC; one sister, Charlena Williams of Darlington, SC; nine grandchildren: Julie Mack-Williams, Corey Mack, Racquel Mack-Jones (Quinin), Daniel Norman Glen, Ebony Hoyte-Wilson (Warrell), Alan J. George, Stephanie Addo-Zuniga (Cliff), Jihirasad (Anthony) Huff, and Keith Jordan Holder-George; eleven great-grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Delphine (Rochelle, deceased) Bruce; two special god-daughters: Annette Williams of Darlington, SC and Ann Carol Ravenell (Curtis) of Columbia, SC; special friend, Lottie Bostic;  a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

    She was preceded in death by her husband and her son, Ralph Mack; a grandson, Tyrone Mack.
