It is with sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Mrs. Harriet "Haggett" Patterson of New York, NY, formally of Darlington, South Carolina passed on Friday, August 26, 2022 in New York.  

Funeral service is 1:00PM on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at Mount Rona Baptist Church.  Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery. 

Obituary

     Mrs. Harriet McIver Patterson was born on May 01, 1939 in Society Hill, South Carolina to her beloved parents the late Jake and Mary McIver. She is the sixth of eleven children. Harriet is affectionately called “Haggett” by her family and friends. Harriet received her primary education in South Carolina and graduated from Rosenwald High School in 1959. In fact, 1959, was a very exciting year for Harriet. She was starting a new life. Harriet married the love of her life, James Patterson, Sr. and gave birth to her eldest child, Willistine, and moved to New York. Out of James and Harriet’s union, five lovely children were born.

     New York become Harriet’s new home and she made lifelong friends. Harriet loved the Lord. She was a member of Greater Central Baptist Church for over fifty years, where she graciously served on the Female Usher Board and wherever needed. Harriet was loving and caring person and demonstrated it by working as a Home Attendant for many years. Not only did she care for her clients, Harriet cared for anyone who was in need. Her doors were always open and she never turned anyone away. She loved to cook. Her favorite dish was collard greens.

     Harriet loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends. Harriet loved to watch Wheel of Fortune, The Price is Right, baseball and football. Her favorite teams were the New York Mets and the New York Jets.

     Harriet was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and family member. She was full of life and a strong woman with a big heart. She made everyone laugh with her sense of humor. To know her was to love her. God called his daughter, Harriet McIver Patterson on August 26, 2022. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

     Those who are left to cherish Harriet’s memory are: Willistine (Warren) Wingate of Manhattan, New York, Theola Patterson, Novenia (Leonard Tedder) Patterson, Mary (Vadus Tedder) Patterson all of Darlington, South Carolina; two sisters: Josephine Williamson of Darlington, South Carolina and Pearl McIver of Bronx, New York; one brother, Jake McIver of Bronx, New York; thirteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, two Godchildren: Patricia Richardson and Sharon Allen, both of Manhattan, New York, special friends: Maisha, Shabazz, Parish, Jackie, and Judy all of New York; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and countless friends who will truly miss her. 

     Those who preceded her in death: her parents, husband, her son, James Patterson, Jr., five sisters: Theola Samuels, Alice Myhand, Nellie Parker, Mary Samuels, and Elizabeth Love, a brother, Nelson Samuels, and her two great grandchildren: Claudelle Jaquez Patterson and Paisley Elizabeth Patterson.

Visitation is held at the residence of a daughter, Mary Patterson, 1335 Creek Crossing Road, Dovesville, SC.
