Mrs. Gussie Irene "Prinny/Princess" Kelly

It is with profound sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. and members of the Jackson and Kelly families announce the transition of Mrs. Gussie Irene Jackson Kelly of Darlington, SC.  "Princess/Prinny", as she was affectionately called transitioned on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at McLeod Regional Medical Center of Florence following an illness.  

Funeral service is 1:00PM on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Salem Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Faith Memorial Gardens. 

     Gussie Irene Jackson Kelly was born on February 28, 1956 to the late Mable Waddell Jackson and Augusta Jackson in Waterbury, Connecticut.  She peacefully entered into eternal rest on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence, SC surrounded by her family.

     She was united in Holy Matrimony to Melvin Kelly in Columbia, South Carolina.

     She received her formal education in the Darlington Public School System graduating from Mayo High School in 1974. In 1978, she graduated from Columbia College, Columbia, South Carolina where she received her license to become a nurse.

     Although she worked at several medical facilities throughout the years she found her most gratifying work at the Vocational Rehabilitation Palmetto Center in Florence, South Carolina where she used her medical skills to help people with addiction issues.

     “Prinny,” as we affectionately called her was a very giving person, often helping people she didn’t know even if it meant she had to do without. She had a heart for people especially the less fortunate and if you took the time to get to know her you would love her. Grounded with a Christian upbringing she returned to Darlington where she grew up and rejoined her home church. During her early years as a member of the Salem Baptist Church Junior choir she was one of the lead soloist on the album “Sit At His Feet And Be Blessed.”  Prinny loved her family and her family and friends loved her. She will be sorely missed by all.

     Prinny leaves to cherish her memory:  her husband, Melvin Kelly; her one son, Travis Kelly; seven siblings: James Jackson, Gladys Green, Leroy (Linda) Jackson, Randy Jackson, Mack (Faye) Patterson of Philadelphia, PA, Willyce (Harold) Felder, Charlotte, North Carolina and Hannah Jackson; two aunts: Dorothy Spencer of Darlington, SC and Almerta Waddell of Philadelphia, PA; along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, family and friends.
