It is with heartfelt sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. and members of the Brown family share the sudden passing of Mrs. Gladys Howard Brown of Darlington. Mrs. Brown transitioned from earth to glory on Tuesday morning, March 12, 2024 at her residence following an sudden illness. 

Funeral service is 11:00 on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at Center Baptist Church.  Interment will follow in Hart No. 2 Cemetery. Public viewing will be 12:00 Noon to 5:00 on Friday, March 15, 2024 with family visitation hours from 3:00pm - 5:00pm.

Obituary

Gladys Brown was born in Darlington County, South Carolina on February 11, 1936, the daughter of Lizzie Foster and Fred Howard. She entered her eternal resting place on Tuesday, March 12, 2024.

She received her formal education in the Darlington County Public School system. Gladys was a licensed cosmetologist for many years and later went on to receive certification as a Home Health Care Attendant. She retired from Carolina Hospital in Florence, SC as a medical professional.

New Providence Church, Darlington, SC is where she began her faith walk in Christ. Upon her return to South Carolina, she transitioned to Cedar Fall Missionary Baptist Church where she was a faithful member for 23 years. Gladys was known for her dedication and devotion to Christ. Her love and generosity and compassion was felt by all who knew her.

Gladys was raised with 9 siblings and 2 nephews: Dawnella Munford, James Foster, Mary Holloway, Douglas Howard, Cleveland (Buck) Howard, nephew Henry Foster, Lizzie Mae Harris, nephew Edward Foster, Beulah Harris and Gayburness Howard. She married Aaron Brown of Timmonsville, SC, and moved to New York City, where she raised four children: Melvin, Wilson, Janice and Lisa. She served as a deaconess and choir member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY. and returned home to Darlington, South Carolina in 1993.

Gladys Brown leaves to cherish her memory: a sister, Lizzie Mae Harris, a son, Wilson Brown, a daughter, Lisa Wright and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. At this celebration service, let us lift up bowed down heads and rejoice! “For he who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust,” (Psalm 91:1-2).

There will be no visitation at the residence.
