Mrs. Florence Sawyer

It is with heartfelt sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. and members of the Sawyer family share the peaceful transition of their matriarch, Mrs. Florence Sawyer of Florence.  Mrs. Sawyer expired on Sunday, June 19, 2022 in the MUSC Health Florence Medical Center following an illness. 

Funeral service is 2:00PM on Sunday, June 26, 2022 at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Faith Memorial Gardens. 

Obituary 

    Mrs. Florence Cassidy Sawyer died June 19, 2022 at MUSC in Florence, SC after an illness. She was born October 11, 1924 in Cheraw, SC to the late Charlie Cassidy and Mary Jane Sellers. 

    Florence Sawyer was educated in Chesterfield County public schools but relocated to the Darlington area where she graduated from Mayo High School class of 1938.

    She was married on May 24,1944 to Winston Sawyer, Sr., of which they were happily wed for 58 years and to their union were four children. 

    Florence was a dedicated member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the Senior Missionary, Senior Usher Board and Youth Usher Advisor. She was a member of the OES Snow Hill Chapter #312 for over 50 years. 

    She worked as a seamstress for many years in New York, Florence, SC and retired from Sherman Manufacture Inc. in Darlington, SC.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Winston Sawyer Sr, her daughter, Argie M. Chamberlain, her granddaughter, Shanea D. Chamberlain, and all thirteen siblings. 

    Surviving to remember her are: her sons: Winston C. Sawyer (Shirley Sawyer) and Francis Phillips (Hermina Phillips); her daughter, Charlotte Redden (Stephen Redden), a special daughter-in-law, Patrice Bess; her grandchildren: Fredrick D. Sawyer, Calvin C. Sawyer, Michael E. Sawyer, LatwandraSawyer (Candice Green-Sawyer), Robert A. Robinson, Ashley Robinson, Cedric Robinson, Qushawnda Allen (Rodney Allen), Rainard A. Chamberlain (Orika S. Chamberlain), Renee Hammond (Michael Hammond), Ronald Phillips, Jennifer Flynnand Jonathan Redden; twenty-six great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. 

    A special thanks to all the workers of Nightingale Attending Service, Ms. Evelyn, Mrs. Deloris Jackson, Ms. Betsy, Ms. Markeda, Ms. Monica Gee, Mrs. Siner Woodbury and Mrs. Patrice Holloman.
