Obituary

It is with profound sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. and members of the McClain family announce the passing of Mrs. Eliza Ann Pugh McClain of Darlington. Mrs. Eliza Ann Pugh McClain transitioned peacefully on Friday, June 9, 2023 at her residence with her family by her side following an extended illness.

Funeral service is 2:00PM on Sunday, June 18, 2023 at St. Paul Holiness Church, Dovesville, SC.  Interment will follow in Gandy Cemetery.

Mrs. Eliza Ann Pugh McClain was the daughter of the late Eliza Mae Pugh Moore and Robert Singletary Jr. She was born June 18, 1953, in Darlington, South Carolina. She peacefully entered into eternal rest at her home on Friday, June 9, 2023, after an extended illness.

Ann, as she was affectionately called, received her formal education in the Darlington County Public Schools and graduated from Rosenwald High School in 1971.

Ann was a hard worker, often working rotating shifts of days and late nights to provide for her family. She was a production worker at Nytronics from 1972-1974 until she left to work at Fiber Industries/Wellman for the next thirty years, 1974-2004, as a Lab Technician.

At an early age, she became a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church where she maintained her membership until she became a member of St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church in Dovesville, SC.

Ann was united in marriage to Lorenzo B. McClain Sr. on March 18, 1973.  To this union, two children were born, Lorenzo Jr. and Angela.

In her leisure time, Ann loved going to church, watching westerns, playing Spades and Bingo, bowling, sitting on her patio to enjoy a cool breeze, and spending time with her family.

Ann leaves behind a legacy to cherish her memories: her husband of 50 years, Lorenzo B. McClain Sr of the home; a son, Lorenzo B. McClain Jr. of Darlington, SC; a daughter, Angela McClain of Washington, DC; five grandchildren, Jaki Jackson, La'Shanti Gattison, Aziza McClain-Baxter, Zaden McClain, and Angelo McClain-Baxter; one great-grand child, KiLayla Jackson; five sisters, Theresa Moore of Bronx, NY, Rosa Edwards and Patricia Edwards both of Darlington, SC, Phyllis (Herbert) Walls of Society Hill, SC, and Rosalind Smith of Virginia; two brothers, Edward Singletary and Toney (Evelyn) Singletary both of Society Hill, SC; three sisters-in-law, Robin S. (Marion, deceased) Edwards, Lillian R. (Leverne, deceased) McClain, and Patty Singletary (Jerome, deceased) all of Darlington, SC; a brother-in-law, Hazel Isaiah (Leila) McClain of Paterson, NJ; a special aunt, Pastor Annie Lou Williamson of Darlington, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings: Emma (Ronnie, deceased) Kinley, Inez (Andrew, deceased) McFarland, Kenneth Singletary, Derrick Singletary, and Dora Singletary.
