It is with profound sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Mrs. Bertia Mae Hendrix Humes of Darlington.  Mrs. Humes, the wife of Mr. Terrence Humes, transitioned peacefully at her residence of Monday, April 19, 2021 following a brief illness.  

Funeral service will be 1:00PM on Saturday, April 24, 2021 in the Chapel of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.  Interment will be private. 

Obituary

     Mrs. Bertia Mae Hendrix Humes, affectionately known as “Bert”, was born on March 4, 1952 in Darlington County, South Carolina the daughter of Lugenia Ross Hendrix and the late Walter Hendrix, Sr. Bertia passed away at her home on Monday, April 19th, 2021 after an extend illness.

     She received her early education at Cain Elementary School. Bertia went on to and graduated as part of Mayo High School “Golden Bears” Class of 1970.  She dedicated her life as one of Jehovah’s Witness in February, 1969.

     She was married to Terrance Humes on October 22, 1988 and to that union a daughter, Ciara Chanel Humes, was born in 1995.

     She was employed by Sherman Manufacturer, Nitronics, Decorative Plants of Darlington and later worked in retail.

     Mrs. Humes enjoyed tending to her flowers, shopping, traveling, spending time with her family both blood and spiritual and she also enjoyed an ice-cold glass of Pepsi, but most of all her ministry. In her early years she enjoyed serving as pioneer in the Darlington Congregation with a special friend.

     Bertia will be dearly missed by those who loved and knew her.  She was preceded in death by:  her father, Walter Hendrix Sr.; her grandmothers: Alice Brown-Perkins-Hendrix-Jones and Bertha Ross.

      Those left to cherish her memories are:  her husband of 32 years, Terrance  Leon Humes of the home;  her daughter, Ciara Chanel Humes of Darlington, SC; her mother,  Lugenia Hendrix of Darlington, SC; two sisters:  Mary Alice Scott of  Lydia, SC and Thomas Loretta “TC” (Raymond) Bowens of Marion, SC; one brother, Walter Hendrix, Jr. of Florence, SC; a special adopted granddaughter, Jocelyn Grace Scott; a special longtime friend and old pioneer partner, Angela Williamson-Johnson of Houston, TX; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. 

     The Humes/Hendrix family would like to give a Special thanks to Mcleod Hospice and Dr. Bajaj and McLeod’s Oncology Group.
