Mrs. Andrena Bruce Sturgis Obituary

It with profound sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Mrs. Andrena Bruce Sturgis. Mrs. Sturgis passed on Tuesday evening, June 18, 2019 in a Florence Medical Facility. 

Funeral service is 2:00pm on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at Christ Temple Holiness Church.  Burial will follow in Faith Memorial Gardens. 

 

                                                           ~Obituary~

“For now I am ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand.  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith, henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.”                      II Timothy 4:6-8

Mrs. Andrena Bruce Sturgis was born in Darlington, South Carolina on March 28, 1921 a daughter of the late Josh and Mary Ellen Wilson Bruce.  She entered into her final resting place on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence, SC.

She received her formal education in the Darlington County Public Schools System.

Andrena lived in New York, New York for several years.  There, she was employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).  She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church where she served as Assistant Secretary of the Usher Board, member of the Mass Choir and the church Nurse.  Later in years, she returned to South Carolina and joined Christ Temple Holiness Church.

She was united in marriage to the late Allen Sturgis. Together they raised a niece and two nephews as their own: Maxine Bruce Chesson, John Bruce and the late Joe Bruce.

“Tee”, as she was affectionately called by family and friends, was a loving sister, aunt, cousin, family member and church member.  Andrena loved going to church. She will be missed by her family, neighbors and friends.

Those who shared the joys and sorrows of life with her and survive to cherish her memory are:  a niece and nephew she reared: Maxine Chesson and John (Nicole) Bruce both of Yonkers, New York; two brothers, Josh (Pearlie) Bruce and Roland (Doris) Bruce both of Darlington, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by: a nephew she reared, Joe Bruce; a sister, Mary L. Pierce; five brothers: Abraham Bruce, Joseph Bruce, Moses Bruce, Willie James Bruce and Woodrow Bruce; a niece, Serena Bruce; and a nephew, Fredrick “Pom” Gray.    

Visitation for the Bruce family will be a the home of a brother and sister-in-law, Josh and Pearlie Bruce, 209 Avenue E, Darlington.
