Obituary

It is with profound sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. and members of the Miller family announce the passing of Mr. Willie James Miller of Darlington, SC.  Mr. Miller passed on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 in  a Florence hospital following a sudden illness. 

Funeral service is 11:00AM on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church.  Interment will follow in United States National Cemetery, Florence. 

Obituary

     Mr. Willie James Miller, Sr. was born the eldest of three in Langdale, Alabama on December 3, 1947 a son of the late the J. P.  (Buster) Miller and Ester Lee Knight Harrell.

     Willie received his formal education at Langdale Public Schools graduating from Rehobeth High School, Fairfax, Alabama in 1965.  He served his Country in the US Army Active-Duty Infantry Division from March 1968 to February 1970 serving in the Vietnam Conflict. Upon his honorable discharge from Active Duty, he joined the US Army Reserve in Yonkers, NY honorably discharge in January 1986 from the Transportation Unit.  

     He was employed with Phelps Dodge Wire Company of Yonkers, NY and Atlas Van Lines until his retirement in 1982.

     Willie met his wife Linda Jones in June 1972. Willie and Linda was blessed in the union with five sons: Terrance Miller, Timothy Miller, Eric Miller (Deceased) , Ta’Jone Miller and Willie Miller, Jr.

     Willie enjoyed his service to God through his church Bethany AME as a Deacon, Usher, Young People Department and lifting his voice in praise on the Men’s Choir. He was always willing to help those in need.

     His hobbies were spending time with his boys, fishing and riding bikes. Enjoyed taking long walks.

     Willie was survived by his wife of 51 years Linda Jones Miller of the home; four sons; two siblings: Althea Harrell of Jacksonville, Florida and Howard (Cherri) Harrell of Bronx, NY; his father-in-law, Ervin Muldrow; two sisters-in-law, Rosemary Jones and Ervina Muldrow; he was favored by God with the blessing of 9 grandchildren:  Dezmond, Jermaine, Michael, Eric Jr, Patrick, Tyjahanay, Shay, YuLani and Jasmine; four great grandchildren: Jennise, Dezire, Ta’Jone and Dezmond Jr.; his first cousins: Jimmy, Christine, Betty Jean and Mary; very close cousins: Frankie Jacobs, Willie Jacobs, Marilyn Jones, Joseph Blair, Gregory (Barbara) Blair, Ronnette (Tony) Bess and Ronald Blair; his god-son, Leroy Smith; his close friend, Roger Kenion along with a host of special nieces, nephews, family and friends that loved him dearly.

     Willie fell asleep in God after a long-term illness on Tuesday September 12, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents and son Eric Miller, Sr.
