It is with sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Mr. Walter Brown, Sr. of Gaston, SC. Mr. Brown exchanged time for eternity on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at a Gaston nursing facility following an illness.
Funeral service is 11:00AM on Monday, July 24, 2023 at Pentecostal United Apostolic Church. Interment will be private.
THE OBITUARY
WALTER BROWN, SR., son of the late Sybel (Johnson) and Isaiah Brown, was born May 28, 1935 in Darlington, South Carolina.
At a young age, Walter moved to New York with his brothers. While there he began his employment with Hammer Soda Company and kept his employment through at least three business mergers later retiring from Pepsi Cola Company. After retiring from Pepsi Cola, he returned to his hometown of Darlington.
He attended Shiloh United Methodist Church in Darlington, South Carolina.
In November 1955, he married the former Maxine Jappa and they formed a family of eight children, Carmen, Elaine, Walter Jr., Dennis, Crystal, Beatrice, David, and Abraham.
In his leisure, he enjoyed bowling and western tv shows. He also enjoyed watching baseball and loved Dallas Cowboys and could be found watching every game during football season. Throughout his life, he enjoyed playing board games with his children and grandchildren.
He was an avid supporter of his children and grandchildren attending their events. He especially enjoyed attending family events and cookouts.
On Saturday, July 15, 2023, he transitioned from this earthly life. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Maxine; siblings, Ruth, David, Joseph, and Mary Alice. To cherish loving memories of him are his children, Carmen Brown Robinson of Norfolk, Virginia, Elaine Brown of Darlington, South Carolina, Walter Brown, Jr., (Mondray) of Portmouth, Virginia, Dennis Brown (Lauren) of Oberlin, Pennsylvania, Crystal Brown Squire of Chesterfield, Virginia, Beatrice Monique Brown Humes (Kevin) of Elizabeth, North Carolina, David C. Brown (Tiara) of Richmond, Virginia, and Abraham Brown of Norfolk, Virginia; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; host of other relatives, neighbors, and friends.
