Obituary

It is with profound sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Mr. Melvin Covington of Hartsville, SC. Mr. Covington passed on Friday night, June 23, 2023 at the Medical University of South Carolina- Charleston following an illness. 

Funeral service is 10:00am on Friday, June 30, 2023 at United States National Cemetery, Florence. Interment will follow. 

Obituary 

Mr. Melvin “Tadpole” Covington was born on December 03, 1949 in Darlington, South Carolina.  He was the son of the late Willie Abraham, Sr. and Harriett Kelly. He passed on Friday, June 23, 2023 at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston following an illness. 

“Tadpole” as he was affectionately called attended the Darlington County Public Schools, graduating from Mayo High School, Class of 1968.  After high school, he enlisted in the United States Military and was a veteran from the United States Marine Corp. While in the military, he received the following medals: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, Combat Action, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry w/Palm.

Melvin was very active in the workforce and was employed at Starwood Nursey until his retirement.

He enjoyed fishing and listening to old school blues, and most of all joking around with all his brothers, especially Eugene known as “Huleo”, his great nephew, “AJ” and close friend/cousin, Roosevelt Scott.

Those left to cherish Melvin “Tadpole” Covington are: his brothers: Eugene Abraham and Charles Wright, both of Florence, SC, Bobby Abraham of Tampa, FL, Richard Wright of Chadbourn, NC, Joseph (Patricia) Wright and Terry Wright, both of Darlington, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, siblings: Willie Abraham, Jr., Larry Wright, Thomas Wright, Furman Wright, and Jeanene Wright.
