Mr. Melvin Joint

It is with sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. and members of the Joint family announces the passing of Mr. Melvin “Earl” Joint of Darlington. Mr. Joint passed on Thursday, August 15, 2024 at McLeod Regional Medical Center of the Pee Dee following an illness. 

Funeral service is 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. 

Obituary

    Mr. Melvin “Earl” Joint was born to the late Willie Smith and Lillie Mae Joint Smith on February 29, 1947, in Darlington, SC. He peacefully entered his eternal resting place on Thursday evening, August 15, 2024, with his family by his side at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence, SC.

    He received his formal education in Darlington County Public Schools and graduated from Rosenwald High School in 1968. 

    Earl joined and was baptized at Mt Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Darlington, SC, at an early age. For over 30 years, he was employed at Clarkman and Moree Farm. 

    Earl enjoyed gardening, fishing, and doing mechanic work. He also enjoyed sitting around family and friends and watching the Dallas Cowboys play. 

    Those left to cherish his precious memories are: his loving wife of 55 years, Mittie Rea Joint, of the home; three sons: Rodney (Ebony) Joint, Daniel (Kym) James and Sammie (Chantel) James; one child reared as his own, Victor James; fourteen grandchildren: Rodney D. Joint, Daysha Joint, Danielle Standifer, Devin Joint, Kaiya Graham, Jalyn Joint, Anttria Joint, Rodney Joint, Jr., Javon Dubose, Jajaun Toney, Trevon James, Samani James, Kem James and Dani James; twelve great-grandchildren; four sisters: Patricia S. Mills, Nancy (Willie) Tedder, Sadie (Michael) Kinley and Amelia (Jimmy) Smith; two brothers: Willie (Gloria) Smith and Leroy (Evelyn) Samuel; two sisters-in-law: Serena Smith and Christine Hardy; two brothers-in-law: Joseph James and Larry Johnson; two aunts: Betty Warren of Winston-Salem, NC and Virginia Joint of Philadelphia, PA; one uncle: Roosevelt (Dorothy) Joint of Philadelphia, PA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends who regret his passing.

    He was preceded in death by his mother and father: Lillie Mae and Willie Smith; a son: Darin Gattison; a grandson: Marquis Tedder; two sisters: Emma Smith Jordan and Geraldine Jones; two brothers: Charles Smith and Randy Smith; a niece, Sha’Niyah Roary; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Jordan; and a sister-in-law, Queen Johnson.

Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the residence, 537 Cedar Ridge Road, Dovesville Community, Darlington, SC.
