Life's Reflections

“God saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb, so He closed your weary eyes and whispered peace be thine.”

Mark Kelvincent McCall also known as “Big Mark” was born on Saturday, March 31, 1979 in Darlington County. He was the oldest son of Barbara McCall and Sammie Gilbert. He was mostly raised by his grandmother, the late Mittie McCall and his aunt, Ruth Davis.

Mark was a very loveable person and everyone he came in contact with he embraced them. He was the “family” baby and was the life of the party. His parting words over the phone or in person was “if it don’t be the flip”, the responding person would say “it will be the flop”.

At an early age, Mark was converted and baptized at the Mt. Rona Baptist Church, Society Hill, SC. He received his former education in the Darlington County Public School System.

Mark was gainfully employed at various jobs in both South Carolina and North Carolina until his health failed.

Mark was loving and giving and loved his family dearly.

Those left to cherish Mark’s memory are: his mother, Reverend Barbara McCall (Reese) Ashley of Dovesville, SC; his father, Bishop Sammie Lee Gilbert of Atlanta, GA; four sisters: Ryecia Ashley of Dovesville, SC, Shamecka Bacote of Winston-Salem, NC, Monique Gladney of Thomasville, NC, and Madison Gilbert of Atlanta, GA; four brothers: Karel (Rita) Flynn of Lexington, KY, Coty (Shakaria) Brooks of Charlotte, NC, Jamie Gilbert of McCormick, SC, and Jairus Gilbert of Atlanta, GA; five aunts and one uncle who also had a part in raising him: Rosa Pierce, Edneatha McCall, Willie Mae (George) Cannon, Willie Marie (John, Jr.) McPhail, and Tommie Lee (Sammie Jean) McCall; his paternal grandmother, Martha Lee Gilbert of Thomasville, NC; cousins who were just like sisters and brothers: Sheila, Kandice, Stacey, Angela, Windy, Myles, Quiana, Marci, Smitty, Jerry (Boss Hogg), Jonathan, Roderick, Tracey, Julius, LeTonga, and Tamala; nieces and nephews that he loved dearly: Caydin, Callie, ZyRell, Zaella, and Sincere; special friends: JR, Moshea, Theodophilis, Randy, Dot, Stacy, Jimmy, Brian, Kendrick, and the entire Dovesville Community; and many other relatives who will always love and remember him.

Mark was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother, Mittie McCall; his aunt, Bertha; and his uncle, Edward McCall, Jr.

Please keep the McCall Family in your thoughts and prayers.
