Mr. Luther “BoPete” Blathers

It is with sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. and members of the Blathers family share the passing of Mr. Luther “BoPete” Blathers. Mr. Blathers passed on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at his residence following and illness. 

Funeral service is 1:00PM on Saturday, May 20, 2023 in the Chapel of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc.  Interment will be private. 

Obituary

   Mr. Luther “BoPete” Blathers, Jr. was born in Darlington, SC on January 14, 1951, a son of the late Luther Blathers, Sr. and Mary Emma McDonald Blathers. He departed this life on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at his home after an illness. 

    He received his formal education in the Darlington County Public Schools. At an early age, he attended St. John United Methodist Church.

    He was united in marriage to Ruth Ella Ledbetter Blathers. 

    He was employed at Darlington Oil Mill for many years until his retirement. Luther or “BoPete” as we affectionately called him was a funny kindhearted person who loved to paint. He loved his family and would do anything he could for them. He will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew him.

    One sister Betty Goodson preceded him in death.

    Survivors left to cherish his memory are: his loving and devoted wife, Ruth Ella Blathers of the home; two sons: Luther Derrick (Christa) Hamlin III, and Nicholas (Takenia) Blathersboth of Darlington, SC; two sisters: Mary Ellen Cottingham and Louise Taylor, both of Darlington, SC; two brothers Willie Bernard Blathers of Darlington, SC and Harry James of Charlotte, NC; two sisters-in-law: Ernestine Ledbetter and Alice Ledbetter of Darlington, SC; eight grandchildren: Derika Hamlin, Derrick Hamlin, Mary Hamlin, Ja’Coreaunte Blathers, NiQuasha Blathers, Jayden Blathers, Jayla Blathers and Jamari Blathers; three great grandchildren: JaCoreaunte Blathers, Jr., Jahail Blathers and Jermiah Blathers; a special aunt, Minnie Lee George of Darlington, SC and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the residence, 415 North Main Street, Apt. 2C, Darlington.
