Mr. Lester “Jabbo” Sharper

With heartfelt sympathy the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc., and members of the family announce the passing of Mr. Lester “Jabbo” Sharper of Darlington, SC. Mr. Sharper transitioned Friday, June 6, 2025, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence, SC, following an illness. 

Public viewing will be held 12:00 - 4:00 PM, Friday, June 13, 2025, at Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, 612 S Main St, Darlington, SC.

Funeral service will be 3:00 PM, Saturday, June 14, 2025, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 3208 N. Governor Williams Hwy, Darlington, SC. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. 

Obituary

    “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.  He maketh me to lie down in green pastures.  He leadeth me beside the still waters.  He restoreth my soul:  He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.  Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me.  Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.  Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:  Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup rennet over.  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.  And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”                           Psalm 23

Mr. Lester Sharper was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on September 12, 1951 a son of the late Esler Mae Sharper.  He departed this life on Friday, June 6, 2025 at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence, SC after an illness.

   He received his formal education in the Darlington County Public Schools attended Rosenwald High School in Society Hill, where he graduated from Class of 1971.

   “Jabbo” or “Jaz” as he was affectionately called, was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

    He lived most of his life in Dovesville Community where he was gainfully employed.  He was employed at Chesterfield Lumber for almost 12 years, Roofing with his cousin, Jim Sharper and lastly he was employed Darlington Palette Maker for many years;

   “Jabbo” was preceded in death by:  his mother, Esler Mae Sharper and other relatives and friends.

    Those left to cherish his memory are: his son, DeTron Ellerbee; a cousin who was like a brother, Roger (Willa) Graham; cousins that he considered as nephews:  Rodney Mouzon and Jim Mouzon; special cousins, Denise Myers, Willie Brown, James Love, George “Bubba” Hill, Antonette Phillips, Darrell Phillips, Wanda Robinson, Tina, Sheila and Vea; a host of other cousins, other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
