It is with heartfelt sorrow that Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Mr. Leroy 'Bubba" Gattison, Jr.  of Society Hill, SC. Mr. Gattison transitioned on Thursday, March 4, 2021 in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center following an illness. 

Funeral service is 1:00PM on Saturday, March 13, 2021 in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.  Interment will follow.  Please adhere to mask wearing and social distancing while attending this service.  

Obituary

Mr. Leroy Gattison, Jr. was born November 20, 1938 in Darlington, South Carolina a son of the late Leroy Gattison and Eva Mae Lincoln Gattison.  He departed this life on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, Hartsville, SC after a brief illness.

Leroy received his formal education in the Darlington County Public Schools graduating from Rosenwald High School Class of 1957.

He served his Country in the United States Army.

At an early age, he joined Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Darlington.

He was united in holy matrimony to Rosa Lee Grant Gattison.  This union was blessed with one daughter, Youlanda Gattison; who affectionately called him “My Daddy”.

During his life, he worked in construction with GG Ray, Long Brothers, CRS, Tecta America Carolinas, Indian Trail, NC and currently with Rike Roofing Services, Fort Mill, SC until his illness.

“Bubba” or “Papa”, as he was affectionately called will be remembered for his sense of humor and interacting with his family and interacting with his family and friends.  He enjoyed sports as a #1 fan of the LA Dodgers and South Carolina Gamecocks.

“Bubba” or “Papa” will be missed tremendously by his family and so many others whose lives he touched.

Survivors left to cherish his memory are:  his loving wife of 57 years, Rosa Lee Gattison of the home; one son, Tony Gattison of Neuillac, France; one devoted daughter, Youlanda (Bobby) Johnson of Bennettsville, SC; a son he raised as his own, Gregory Grant of Society Hill, SC; six grandchildren: Ka’Asia Harrison, Sadonia Grant (Aldric), Jalon Johnson, Kijana Johnson, Chloe’ Gattison and Alice Gattison; two great grandchildren: Kalia McFarland and Zayyan Wallace; four brothers: Roosevelt (Dorothy) Joint of Philadelphia, PA, James (Robbie) Gattison, Jack (Gwendolyn) Gattison and Sammie (Brenda, deceased) Gattison all of Darlington, SC; two sisters: Lorene (Apostle Charley) Johnson of Darlington, SC and Mary (Lawrence) Watts of Florence, SC; one aunt, Bertha Gattison of Darlington, SC; four brothers-in-law: Herbert (JoAnn) Grant of Hartsville, SC, Harold (Marie) Grant, Charles (Lila) Grant and Jimmy Grant all of Society Hill, SC; three sisters-in-law: Mary Gattison of Darlington, SC, Gladys Gattison of New Haven, CT and Vermella (Michael) Johnson of Society Hill, SC; he considered all his nieces and nephews as his own children – especially: Tara Grant, Dedra Grant and Jamal Grant all of Society Hill who they call “Papa”; a host of cousins and friends; his adopted family: Bonnie McQueen Seals and Reverend Byron (Valerie) Wilson.

He was preceded in death by: his parents: Leroy and Eva Mae Gattison; four sisters: Florrie Woods, Bessie Mae Gattison, Ida Mae Smith and Dorothy Wilds; three brothers: Willie Gattison, Ernest Joint and Nathan Gattison and sister-in-law, Brenda Gattison.

Visitation is held at the residence, 652 Church St. Society Hill, from 5-9 pm daily.
