Obituary

Mr. Leroy Lucas, affectionately known by many of his friends as “Cool Hand Luke” was born in Bishopville, SC on January 18, 1929 a son of the late Frances Greene Lucas and Roland Lucas. He passed away peacefully on his 96th birthday at Springdale Health Care Center, Camden, SC after an extended illness. His journey was one of remarkable resilience and steadfast faith. While he didn’t receive a formal education, Leroy had an exceptional work ethic, evident by his years of working on the railroad alongside his son, Roland, in Connecticut, and later as a construction worker in South Carolina until the age of 62.

Leroy’s life took a significant turn in 1966 when he was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Meriden, CT. This marked the beginning of a deeply committed spiritual journey. His dedication to his faith was inspiring; though his association with Jehovah’s Witnesses, he overcame his lack of formal education and learned to read and write. This testament to his perseverance continued in South Carolina, where he tirelessly served as a regular pioneer for many years, sharing his faith with unwavering zeal. His commitment directly resulted in two individuals joining the West Darlington congregation, a testament to his compassionate outreach.

Beyond his faith, Leroy found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He cherished his fishing trips with his close friend, Frank Myers, but his greatest love was for Jehovah, a love he generously shared with everyone he met.

Leroy was a widower to Mamie Lee Lucas, Lucille Lucas and Lena Bell Lucas. At the time of his passing, Leroy was a devoted husband to Lillian Jones Lucas, who provided love and care during his later years and illness. His legacy extends beyond his devotion to his faith and family.

He is survived by: his loving wife, Lillian J. Lucas; his son, Roland (Thomasina) Lucas of Hartsville, SC; his daughter, Shirley Carlyle of Georgia; his adopted daughter, Lucille Lucas of Florida; six granddaughters: Cora (Dataye) Meredith of Hartsville, SC, Renee Lucas of Florence, SC, Veronica Linnear, Latonya Coney, Shelia Lowe and Tameka Smith all of Georgia; three grandsons: Elijah Coney of Georgia, Akeem Hickman of Texas and DeAngelo Thomas of Summerville, SC; numerous stepchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. His spirit of unwavering faith, resilience and kindness will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.

Leroy was preceded in death by: his parents; one son, Leroy Lucas, Jr.; one daughter, Eartherleen S. Lucas; two sisters: Earline Teel and Addie M. Stevenson and one grandson,Dayshawn Allen.

He also leaves behind a wealth of memories and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all those who knew him.
