Mr. Leroy Bishop Obituary

It is with profound sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Mr. Leroy Bishop of Hartsville. Mr. Bishop expired on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at his residence. 

Funeral service is 1:00pm on Saturday, November 14, 2020 in New Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery. Interment will follow. 

Obituary

    “For now I am ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand.  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith, henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.”               II Timothy 4:6-8

    Mr. Leroy Bishop was born in Society Hill, SC on November 30, 1934 a son of the late Huge and Marie Bishop.  He entered his  final resting place on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at his residence.

    He received his formal education in the Darlington County Public Schools graduating from Rosenwald High School Class of 1954.  He was the first black SC bus driver to drive the school bus.

    Later he joined the United States Army in 1957 and was honorably discharged.

    He was united in marriage to Bobbie Samuel Bishop on June 3, 2004 at New Hopewell Baptist Church by Pastor Calvin Daniels.

    He was a life member of New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church where he was a member of the Trustee Board, the Men’s Choir, Home Bound, the Senior Choir and any other capacity as needed to serve.

    Leroy was employed at the Sonoco Products of Hartsville where he retired.  He sung with the Sonoco Men Choir for years.

    Those left to cherish his memory are: his loving wife, Bobbie S. Bishop of the home; his four daughters: Teresa Hough of Hartsville, SC, Gloria (James) Boone of Accokeek, MD, Debra Thompson of Raleigh, NC and Wanda (Robert) McFadden of Snellville, GA; two sons: Terry Bishop and Tony (Theola) Bishop both of Hartsville, SC; four sisters: Daisy Thompson, Laura McFarland, Margarite Jones and Nancy Thompson all of Washington, DC;  a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Odell Samuel of Darlington, SC; two sister-in-law, Paulette (Tom) Hampton of Camden, SCand Thelma Ree Byrd of Timmonsville, SC; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
