It is with heartfelt sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. and members of the Martin family announces that transition of Mr. Johnny Martin. Mr. Martin passed on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at his residence following an illness. 

Funeral service is 3:00pm on Friday, January 19, 2023 at Cherry Grove Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.


Mr. Johnny “John Boy” Martin was born July 30, 1961 in Darlington, South Carolina, a son of the late Jesse Martin, Jr. and Thelma Muldrow Martin.  He quietly departed this life on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at his residence after an illness.

He received his formal education in the Darlington County Public Schools graduating from St. John’s High School, Class of 1979.

At an early age, he attended Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church along with his family.

Johnny was gainfully employed at the SC Highway Department and lastly was employed at A. O. Smith as a material handler until he retired,

He was united in marriage to Sherill Williamson Martin.

“John Boy” was a smiling and talkative person.  He loved his Dallas Cowboys and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory and legacy: his wife, Sherill Martin of Florence, SC; one daughter, Tatyana Martin of Florence, SC; four sons:  Jamal Martin of Florence, SC, Travis (Sentrella) McPhail of Darlington, SC, Kevin Bailey and Johnny Bailey both of Hartsville, SC;  two step-children: Rasheed Williamson and Nikia Williamson; fifteen grandchildren; his siblings:  Helen Martin, Jessie (Dennis) Hudson of Darlington, SC, Mary Ellen Martin, Rebecca Martin Hudson, Benjamin (Lottie) Martin all of Hartsville, SC and Calvin Martin of Darlington, SC;  two aunts: Sadie Muldrow of Wilmington, NC and Maggie Cohen of Darlington, SC; one uncle, Ervin Muldrow of Columbia, SC; sisters-in-law:  Loretta Martin, Carrie Muldrow, Annie (Minister Clyde) Peterson and Mary (Wilson) Brockington; brother-in-law, Reverend Franklin (Roz) Williamson; special niece, Shaquandra McFarland; a special nephew: Michael Martin; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: three brothers: George Muldrow, Walter Martin and Alphonzo Martin; a brother-in-law, Sylvester Williamson.

Visitation for relatives and friends will held at the residence of a son, Travis McPhail, 1568 Syracuse Community Road, Darlington.
