Mr. J.C. Coe Obituary

With heartfelt sympathy, the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc., and members of the Coe family announce the passing of Mr. J.C. Coe of Darlington, SC. Mr. Coe transitioned Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at McLeod Hospice House, Florence, SC.

Public viewing will be 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM, Friday, August 1, 2025, at Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc., 612 S Main St, Darlington.

Funeral service will be held 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Christ Temple Holiness Church, 102 Farm St, Darlington. Interment will follow at Faith Memorial Gardens,  Rogers Rd, Darlington, SC.

Obituary

    “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”  II Timothy 4:6-8

    Mr. J. C. Coe was born in Darlington, South Carolina on March 5, 1938 the son of the late Evelyn Warren and Wilson Coe and was reared by his father and step-mother, Lizzie Coe. He passed peacefully Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at McLeod Hospice House, Florence, SC.

     He received his formal education in the Darlington County Public Schools. After graduation, he made his home in Jamaica, New York where he became a member of Friendship Baptist Church under the leadership of Bishop Mitchell Howard Hudson. While in New York, he worked various jobs, his last employment was in the garment district as a fabric cutter. After retiring, he returned back to Darlington, SC where he joined Christ Temple Holiness Church under the leadership of Suffragan Bishop Wesley Belin. He was a faithful member of the Deacon Board and the Men’s Chorus.

      Deacon Coe was united in marriage to the late Zennie Harrison Coe and to this union two children was born: James Calvin Coe and Michele Coe Fox.  He later was united in marriage to the late Dorothy Baker Coe along with her children: Charlesetta Baker, Charles Baker and Latona (Tyrone) Edwards; her twelve grandchildren.

     Deacon Coe was preceded in death by his siblings: Herbert Blair, Everlena Johnson, James Blair, Ernest Scott, and Louis Mumford; and one bonus grandson, Kaysohn.

     Those left to cherish his memory are:  two children:  James Calvin Coe (Karen) of Manhattan, NY and Michele Coe Fox (George) of Darlington, SC; his grandchildren:  Hasuan Fox of Queens, NY and Maya Fox of Florence, SC; one sister, Carrie Quick of Darlington, SC; one aunt, Mrs. Ruby Burrell of Queen Village, NY; eleven bonus grandchildren: Tori, Todd, Tamal, Tanae, Taleah, Tyneice, Tyleak, Tysheen, Tykira, Daquan and Shaquille; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
