Mr. Howard McKay Obituary

It is with heartfelt sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Mr. Howard McKay of Darlington. Mr. McKay transitioned on Independence Day, July 4th, 2022 following an illness.

Funeral service is scheduled for 11:00AM on Saturday, July 9th, 2022 at Macedonia Baptist Church with Pastor Typrice Hanner, officiating. Interment will follow in the Round O Baptist Church Cemetery.

     “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.”

 

    Mr. Howard “Po Jim” McKay was born on July 31, 1958, a son of  Lucille McKay and the late  James Gattison.  He transitioned peacefully on Monday, July 4, 2022 at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence, SC following an illness. 

    Howard attended the Public School System of Darlington County and was a graduate of Rosenwald High School, Class of 1976. A hard-working individual, Howard was a skilled truck driver and drove for many companies in Darlington and the surrounding areas. He was a Jack-of-all-trades and there was nothing he couldn’t fix.

    At an early age, Howard accepted Jesus as His Savior and attended The Church in The Lord Jesus Christ of The Apostles' Doctrine Inc.  

    Those who are left to cherish Howard’s memories are: his mother, Mrs. Lucille McKay McNeil;  his children: LaTasha (Russell) Green, Kadajah McKay, Kadejah McKay, Dedrick (Christian) Mack, and Temecca Mack; a niece reared as his own, Uniqua (Jason) McDowell; seven grandchildren; a special grandchild, Karter Backus; four great grandchildren; siblings: Eleanor Shirley (Alphonso) Moses, Ruby McNeil, Hattie Ann (Raleigh) DuBose, Caldonia (Maurice) Hunter, Coleman (Martha) McNeil, David (Lillie) McNeil, Sammie McNeil, Clara Williams, Almeta (Nathaniel) Moses, Lucille Ross, Kemp Tedder, Clay (Kenya) Tedder, Charles Tedder, Kent Tedder, Rosland (Dennis) Rawls, and Larry Gattison; his aunts: Lucy (Charles) Jacobs and Juanita (Eugene) Tedder; other aunts and uncles; sisters and brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews,other relatives and friends. A friend to the end, Viola Mack Capers.  

   Those who preceded Howard in death: his father, James Gattison, his step-father, Hart McNeil, his son, Gregory McKay; siblings: Louis McKay, Richard “Bird” McKay, Howard Gattison, and Johnnie McNeil.  

Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at 1317 Gemini Drive, Darlington from 4:00 to 8:00pm daily.
