It is with profound sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. and members of the Derry Family share the transition of Mr. Heyward Derry of Darlington. Mr. Derry exchanged time for eternity on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at his residence following an illness.
Celebration of Life for Mr. Heyward Derry will be 12:00 Noon on Saturday, December 23, 2023 at Flat Creek Baptist Church. Final Disposition will occur at Faith Memorial Gardens.
“For now I am ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith, henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.” II Timothy 4:6-8
Mr. Heyward Derry, son of the late Harley and Rena Poole Derry, was born on March 9, 1934, in Darlington, South Carolina. He peacefully entered his final resting place on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at his home in Darlington, SC.
Heyward received his formal education in the Darlington County public school system, graduating from Mayo High School. He received an Associate’s degree in Business from Florence Darlington Technical College.
He was a member of Round O Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, taught Sunday School, member of the Usher Board and a Choir Member. Later, he moved his membership to Flat Creek Baptist Church where he served until his health declined.
He served his Country in the United States Navy and after his tenure, he was honorably discharged.
Mr. Derry was employed at Dupont of Florence as a Supervisor retiring after over 25 years of employment.
Heyward was united in holy matrimony to Helen Ann Poole on June 2, 1956. To this happy union of 67 years, four children were born, Carolyn, Heyward Jr., Reginald and Corey.
Heyward was preceded in death by: two sisters, Elnora Gandy and Ollie Bell Antrum; two brothers, James Blake, Sr. and James “Booster” Derry.
Those who shared the joys of life with him and survived to cherish his memories are: a loving and devoted wife, Helen Derry of the home; children: Carolyn Pearson, Heyward Derry Jr. (LaTasha), Reginald Fitzgerald Derry (Sabrina) and Corey Derry (Evelyn); grandchildren: Robert Nathaniel Pearson (Nichole), Eric Brandon Pearson (India), Anja Re’gine Derry, Harlan Brooks Derry, Kaya Simone Derry and Koven John Derry; great grandchildren: Damien Eric Pearson and Jazmine Imani Pearson; one brother, Clifton Derry (Marie) of Darlington, SC; two brothers-in-law: Roosevelt Rubin and Bobby Poole (Willie Ann); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the residence,1340 Mt. Sanai Road, Darlington.
