It is with heartfelt sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Mr. Hazel Fleming of Cheraw, formally of Darlington, SC. Mr. Fleming transitioned on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 in Cheraw medical center.
A Memorial will be held at a later date.
~Obituary~
Mr. Hazel Alonza Fleming was born in Darlington, South Carolina on February 27, 1950 a son of the late James Fleming and Aileen Rogers Fleming. After a brief illness, he departed this life on Tuesday, May 26, 202 at McLeod Cheraw Hospital in Cheraw, South Carolina.
Hazel, known as “Big Baby”, was a 1969 graduate of Mayo High School in Darlington, South Carolina. Shortly after graduation, he went to New York and became a Chef Cook. There he worked for several years of more. After which, he attended the school of Juilliard for Musical Arts. He played all instruments but his favorite was his “Guitar”.
After returning to South Carolina, he worked at Florence General Hospital for several years a an Orderly under the supervision of the late Alphonso Romeo Washington, who was his brother-in-law. He later moved to Myrtle Beach and played with a band – he loved his music. Hazel lived there for 30 years where he was employed as a Chef Cook until his health would not allow him to work any longer.
Hazel was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church when it was located on Coker Street in Darlington, South Carolina.
In addition to his parents, Hazel was preceded in death by: three sisters, three brothers, one of which was his twin brother, Heyward Alphonso Fleming who wasin the Marine Corp as a Lance Corporal.
Hazel leaves to cherish his precious memories: two daughters: Porscha Harrison of Darlington, SC and Natasha Harrison of Florence, SC; three granddaughters; one grandson; one great grandson; three sisters: Mary Elizabeth Robbins of Bronx, NY, Carolyn Fleming Washington of Florence, SC, Marie Fleming (Cleveland) Josey of Merritt Island, FL; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins; other relatives and friends.
