A Celebration of Life

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. Psalm 121:1

Mr. George Taylor, Sr. was born May 17, 1942 in Tallahassee, Florida to the late Lacey and Lulu Taylor. George being the kind soul he was, blessed this earth with 80 years, 11 months and 42 days. George took his reward and answered the Master’s call on April 5, 2023 in his home with his loving wife at his side.

George was one of a kind! An absolute family man, working hard to provide a loving and stable home for his wife and sons.   He never met a stranger and was an immediate friend to anyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. Often known as the “neighborhood dad” became a firm yet understanding role model to many, a genuine Man of Valor.

George committed his life to God and was a faithful prayer warrior an attended Round O Missionary Baptist church until his illness prevented him from doing so.

George was educated in Tallahassee, FL graduating from Tallahassee High School in 1960.  An avid sportsman George excelled in football, basketball, and baseball throughout high school. Although he loved sports of all kinds he especially enjoyed fishing when the weather was nice.

Upon graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Hamilton in New York. During his tenor, George was awarded the National Defense Service Metal as a sharpshooter and marks men.  After a tour in Germany, George was honorably discharged and made his home in Brooklyn, New York.

Life’s journey would soon lead George to court and marry the love of his life Shirley A. Richardson on November 12, 1971. To this union they would raise three sons: Bruce, LaShawn, and George, Jr.

After his military service he was a devoted worker at Howard Clothes and Satellite Pharmacy in Brooklyn, New York. Ultimately, George would serve his country once more becoming a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service until his retirement in 2005.

George was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers: Carnell Austin, Sr. and James Austin.

He leaves to cherish sweet memories: his devoted wife of 51 years, Shirley A. Taylor of the home; his children: Bruce (Katrina) Taylor of North Charleston, SC, LaShawn Taylor of Darlington, SC, George (Latoya) Taylor, Jr. of Charlotte, NC and Debra Taylor of Philadelphia, PA; Brothers: Arthur, Alex and Charles Austin all of Tallahassee, FL, Alexander Austin of Kansas City, MO; Sisters: Alice (Fred) Adele, Kimberly Austin, Cecilia Mitchel all of Tallahassee, FL and Terri Rashad of Niceville, Florida; sisters-in-law: Lillian McClain of Darlington, SC, Annie Mae Austin of Tallahassee, FL, Joyce Richardson of Florence, SC; brothers-in-law: Cleve Frierson of Darlington, SC and Moses McPhail of Hartsville, SC; 10 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
