It is with heartfelt sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. and members of the Sansbury family share the passing of Mr. Eugene Sansbury. Mr. Sansbury transitioned early Monday morning, July 24, 2023 at his residence following an illness.
Funeral service is 2:00pm on Sunday, July 30, 2023 at Lawson Grove Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the cemetery.
Obituary
Mr. Eugene Sansbury, affectionally called “Gene,” was born on June 7, 1954 in Darlington County, South Carolina, to the late Mr. Fred Sansbury and the late Mrs. Kathleen Coe Sansbury. He was the youngest of three boys and one girl. After being critically ill for over two months, Gene quietly transitioned from his earthly life on Monday morning, July 24, 2023 at 4:00AM at his residence from heart and kidney failure.
Gene attended Spaulding High School in Lamar, South Carolina. At a young age he went to live in New York for a short while, but suddenly discovered he preferred the country life to the big city life and returned to South Carolina and permanently resided in the Darlington area.
Gene was united in marriage to Miss Sylvia Hough on July 20, 1984. He worked as a welder at The Superior Machine Co. in Florence, SC for 40 years, and retired in April, 2016. Since retirement, he has spent his time relaxing and enjoying the outdoors and being with nature. He loved the outdoors.
Survivors left to cherish his memory are: wife Sylvia of Darlington, SC, son, Jeromy Moses of Florence, SC, sister, Francina Sansbury of Florence, SC, niece, Cathy Sansbury of Georgia, two great nephews: Timothy Sansbury of Georgia, and Trenton Ben of California, and two great-great niece and nephew: Ava Reyes and Fitzgerald Reyes both of Georgia, and a host of cousins and friends.
Gene was preceded in death by both his parents, Mr. Fred Sansbury and Mrs. Kathleen Coe Sansbury, and two brothers, Thomas Sansbury of St. Stephens, SC, and George “Guitar” Sansbury of Darlington, SC.
Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the residence, 1933 East Seven Pines Road, Darlington.
