It is with sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Mr. Curtis James, Jr. of Lamar, SC. Mr. James passed on Friday, August 20, 2021 in McLeod Hospital following an illness.
Funeral service is 11:00Am on Saturday, August 28, 2021 in Plaza Memorial Cemetery. Interment will follow. Please adhere to mask wearing and social distancing while attending this service.

Mr. Curtis James, Jr. was born in Darlington, South Carolina on July 13, 1953 a son of the late Curtis James, Sr. and Minnie Lee Bruce James Kirkland. He departed this life on Friday, August 20, 2021at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence, SC.
He received his formal education in the Darlington County Public Schools graduating from Spaulding High School Class of 1971. After graduation, he resided in Brooklyn, NY.
While in New York, he attended Progressive Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Gibson where he served as the church drummer. “June”, as he was affectionately called, enjoyed playing the drums for various churches and gospel quartets both in the north and in the south.
He was joined in marriage to the late Lillie Faye Wilson James.
He was employed at Truck Rite and Imperial Trucking Company of New York as a Truck Driver.
After returning home to South Carolina, he attended Bethany Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Emanuel Simon
He was preceded in death by: his parents: Minnie Kirkland and Curtis James, Sr.; his granddaughter, Karima Dargan; his siblings: Sylvester James and Charles Brunson.
Those left to cherish his memory are: his children: Vonda (Eldridge) Dargan, Wanda Damon, Renee Brown, Deedrick (Vanessa) Woods all of Lamar, SC and Courtney James of New York; his sisters: Gloria James of Lamar, SC, Willie Etta Owens and Lucile Murphy both of Dillon, SC; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; a special friend, Barbara Holmes; two aunts: Rosa McCullum of Lamar, SC and Virginia Spann of Hartsville, SC; two uncles: Rufus Bruce of Cleveland, OH and Willie Bruce of Trenton, NJ; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Can you image on last Friday when the Lord sent His Angels to Curtis to come home, that Curtis used his famous quote . . .
“Okay, you got me.”
Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at 624 Grooms Drive, Lamar.
