It is with heartfelt sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Mr. Bobby Hawkins of Newark, New Jersey, formally of Darlington, SC. Mr. Hawkins departed this earthly life on Thursday, March 30, 2023 in New Jersey.
A Celebration of Life is 3:00PM on Saturday, April 8, 2023 in the Chapel of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. Interment will follow in Shiloh UMC Cemetery.
Bobby Hawkins was born November 19, 1948, to the late John Wesley Hawkins Sr. and Rosalee Hawkins in Newark, New Jersey.
Bobby attended Dayton Street Elementary School. He worked miscellaneous jobs up until he started his career job with Lasky Printing company. Bobby worked and retired after thirty years from Lasky. Upon his retirement from Lasky, he opened a bar called Eureka. Bobby enjoyed being the owner of his bar and met a lot of people along the way. After he sold the bar, he started helping several friends at the floral shop delivering flowers. Bobby assisted Iris, Arcadia, and Geneva’s florists until his health would not allow him to deliver flowers anymore.
Bobby was his own realtor who owned four different buildings in Newark, NJ until he sold the properties.
Bobby was a lifetime member of Israel Memorial AME Church where he became a member of the Gospel Chorus and the All-Male Chorus until his health started to decline. Bobby was active in the church and loved contributing to various organizations.
Bobby enjoyed traveling and hanging out with family and friends. Bobby enjoyed having family dinners during the holidays as well as going to parties. Bobby enjoyed dressing up in leisure and dress suits. He was well known for wearing suspenders and Kangol hats matching his outfits.
Bobby leaves to cherish his memory: his Loving Wife of 54 years, Irene Hawkins of Irvington, New Jersey. Two Children Terrence Hawkins of Atlanta, GA and Richelle Hawkins of Alpha, New Jersey. Two Grandsons Brandon Devon Hawkins of New Orleans and Tahaj Wesley Hawkins of Alpha, NJ. A Great Grandson Brayden Xavier Hall of Newark, New Jersey. One Aunt Eloise Baker of Philadelphia, PA. Godson Travis Jerome Brumfield of Newark, New Jersey. And a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
