With heartfelt sympathy, Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc., and members of the McCullum family announce the passing of Mr. Alphonso McCullum of Darlington, SC. Mr. McCullum transitioned peacefully at home on Thursday, October 30, 2025, after an illness.

Public viewing will be held 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Friday, November 7, 2025, at Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, 612 S Main St, Darlington, SC.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM, Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Spaulding Middle School, 400 Cartersville Hwy, Lamar, SC. Interment will follow at Plaza Memorial Gardens, Plaza Rd, Lamar, SC.

Obituary

    Mr. Alphonso McCullum, also known as “Phonso,” was born to the late Alvester and Rosa Mae Bruce McCullum, on April 11, 1958, in Darlington County, South Carolina. He departed this life on Thursday, October 30, 2025 at the residence of his sister, Rosa Lee McClain in Lamar, SC.

    At an early age, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior, and joined Bethany Baptist Church, in Lamar, SC.

    “Phonso” received his formal education in the Darlington County Public Schools graduating from Spaulding High School, Lamar, SC, Class of 1976. He later made his home in Trenton, NJ where he worked at various jobs. His last employment was at Trane, Inc. until his health began to fail. 

    He enjoyed playing baseball, working on automobiles and watching his favorite football team, the Philadelphia Eagles.

    “Phonso” was preceded in death by his parents, Alvester and Rosa Mae Bruce McCullum; aunts: Minnie Kirkland and Area McDonald, uncles: Arthur Lee Bruce, Leonard Bruce and Charles Bruce.

    He was united in marriage to Jackie Harper McCullum.

    Those left to cherish his memory are:  his wife Jackie Harper McCullum of East Windsor, NJ, his two sons: Mark (LaToya) Brown of Stone Mountain, GA and  Anthony (Faye) Brown of Conyers, GA; siblings: Louise Jacobs of Bronx, NY, Levester McCullum of Tabor City, NC, Rosa Lee McClain (Caregiver) of Lamar, SC, Annette McCullum of Timmonsville, SC, Eugene (Natalie) McCullum of Sicklerville, NJ, Lafayette (Linda) McDonald of Sumter, SC, Aaron (Vanessa) McCullum of Catawba, NC, grandchildren: Antion and Tavion Brown. Aunts: Virgina (John) Spann of Hartsville, SC, and Essie Duke of Lamar, SC; uncles: Rufus (Sandra) Bruce of Cleveland, Ohio, and Willie Lee Bruce of Princeton, NJ. His Special Friends: Erskine Lyder and Donald Gilmore, and bonus children, Nikkie, Jim and Tara, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
