With heartfelt sympathy, Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc., and members of the James family announce the passing of Mr. Alfonzo James of Darlington, SC. Mr. James transitioned Thursday, June 18, 2026, at his residence with his family by his side. 

The family will be receiving friends at the home, 103 Les Dr, Darlington, SC 29532.

Public viewing of Mr. James will be held from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc., 612 S Main St, Darlington, SC.

Funeral service will be held 1:00 PM, Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Tabernacle Worship Center, 1200 S Main St, Darlington, SC.

Obituary

    Mr. Alfonzo James was born in Darlington County, SC on April 25, 1962 a son of the late Robert James, Sr. and Rosetta Jacobs James. He departed this life on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at his residence peacefully with family along his bedside.  

    He received his formal education in the Darlington County public school system.

    Alfonzo James lived all his life in Darlington County where he was employed at Wilson Hospital. He also assisted with repairs in a car garage until his health declined.

    Alfonzo “Fonz” as he was affectionately known, was a loving husband, step-father, son-in-law, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends who dearly loved him.

    Survivors left to cherish his memory are: his wife, Dianne Coe James of the home: two step-sons: Wendell Holmes, Jr., of the home and Rick Holmes of Louisville, Kentucky; mother-in-law, Ruth Coe of Darlington, SC; five step-grandchildren: DeAja of the home, Avery, Cameron both of Darlington, SC, Rick Jr. and Matthew both of Louisville, Kentucky; six sisters: Jessie James, Rosa J. Wallace, Mae (Donald) Terry, Bobbie (Joseph) Williamson, and Marsha (Maurice) Sheppard all of Darlington, SC and Sarah (Randall) Campbell of Lexington, SC; three sisters-in-law: Queen Coe & Annie Ruth Coe both of Darlington; Lillie Jacobs of Baltimore, Maryland; two brothers-in-law: Lawrence (Queenie) Coe and Gary Coe both of Darlington, SC; one god-sister: Rosa Mae Hickman; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 

    Family members that preceded “Fonz” in death: brothers, Robert “Caveman” James, Jr., Deacon John D. James, Eddie Jacobs; sister: Willistine James; father-in-law, Lawrence Coe, Sr.; step-daughter, Loretta Holmes; god-brother, Charles Goodson; three aunts: Pastor Marie Yarborough Pooler, Flora Thomas and Gerthenia Jacobs; one uncle, Phillip Thomas; five nephews: Andra, Morise, Fred, Roland & De’Marion; maternal and paternal grandparents and a step daughter-in law.
