Obituary

“For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”  II Timothy 4:6-8

Our beloved mother, Mrs. Willie Mae Nevels McCants entered eternal rest on Thursday, July 10, 2025 at Bethea Baptist Healthcare Center in Darlington, SC. She was born in Marion, South Carolina on October 15, 1924 the daughter of the late John Wesley Nevels and Annie Fleming Nevels.

She graduated from Mayo High School, class of 1942.  Shortly after graduating from high school, she was united in marriage to the late Mr. Albertus “Buster” McCants and to that union was born one son, Albertus “Tony” McCants.

Willie Mae along with her son later moved to Washington, DC and joined Galbraith AME Church.  She began a distinguished career with the U.S. Treasury Department where she received many awards for excellence and dedication to service retiring in 1987.

In 1996, she returned back to Darlington, SC and continued to serve the Lord as a member of Bethel AME Church where she served on the stewardess Board No. 2.

Mrs. Willie Mae enjoyed reading, completing complex crossword puzzles and watching her favorite NFL team, the Carolina Panthers and NASCAR racing.  She also enjoyed cooking and her family enjoyed the many flavors from her kitchen, especially during the holiday seasons.  She leaves a legacy of unconditional love, family honesty and hard work.  You were never a stranger in her home because of her hospitality and love.

Mrs. Willie Mae McCants leaves to cherish her loving memory:  her son, Albertus (Donnie) McCants;  her niece,  Peressa Williams; a grandniece, Eyamba Daniel; a great grandnephew, Triston Williams all of Charleston, SC; a special nephew and co-worker, Larry Brewington of NC;  her bonus family:  Dozier Simon & Family,  Elizabeth Pope & Family, Diane Ferguson & Family of Maryland and Gwendolyn Simon & Family of Darlington, SC;  special acknowledgement of friendship to Margie Jett, who engaged in conversation with her every single day for many years and her class leader, Yvonne Jett Alston and many other Church members who called or visited her.
