It is with heartfelt sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Mother Rosa Mae McCullum of Lamar, SC. Mother McCullum passed on Sunday, July 31, 2022 at her residence.
Celebration of Life will be 2:00PM on Sunday, August 7, 2022 in Spaulding Middle School Gym with Reverend Emmanuel Simon, Pastor of Bethany Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Plaza Memorial Cemetery.
Obituary
Mrs. Rosa Mae Bruce McCullum, affectionately known as “Rose” or “Ma Rose”, was born in Darlington County, South Carolina, on June 2, 1936, to the late Rufus Bruce and Carrie“Tiny” Dukes Bruce. She departed this life on Sunday, July 31, 2022 at her home.
Rosa received her formal education in the Darlington County School System. She left school to marry her sweetheart the late Alvester McCullum. From this union, eight (8) children were born.
Rosa worked as a domestic for the prominent Bell Family of Lamar, SC before moving on to her dream job as a seamstress. She worked for Marlowe’s Manufacturers, Hartsville Manufacturing and Redd Fox Industries for many years, retiring in 1994.
At an early age, Rosa accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior, and joined Bethany Baptist Church in Lamar, SC. She was an active member of the Usher Ministry until her health began to fail. On Sundays after church, she would cook dinner for anyone who wanted a plate. She enjoyed spending time with her friends at the Lamar Senior Center, in Lamar. Rosa liked to fellowship, laugh and play games.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, the late Rufus and Carrie Bruce; her siblings: Charles Bruce, Arthur Lee Bruce, Leonard Bruce, Minnie Kirkland and Area McDonald.
Rosa leaves the following to cherish her memory: her children: Louise Jacobs of Bronx, NY, Levester McCullum of Tabor City, NC, Rosa Lee McClain of Lamar, SC, Alphonso (Jackie) McCullum of Trenton, NJ, Annette Sam of Timmonsville, SC, Eugene (Natalie) McCullum of Sicklerville, NJ, Lafayette (Linda) McDonald of Sumter, SC; Aaron (Vanessa) McCullum of Catawba, NC ; her siblings: Rufus (Sandra) Bruce of Cleveland, Ohio, Virginia (John) Spann of Hartsville, SC and Willie Lee (Gee Gee) of Princeton, NJ. She also leaves 18 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, Caregiver,Eleanor Williams, god-daughter, Annie Mazyke; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends: Elouise Bailey, Dora Bell Brown, Rutha Mae Lucky and Marguerite Williams.
Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the residence, 308 S. Railroad Avenue, Lamar.
