It is with heartfelt sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. and members of the Alford family share the peaceful transition of their matriarch, Mother Marie Bacote Alford of Darlington, SC. Mother Alford exchange time for eternity on Sunday evening, March 5, 2023 at McLeod Hospice House following an illness. 

Celebration of Life is 1:00PM on Saturday, March 11, 2023 in Flat Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Round O Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mother Marie Bacote Alford was born on June 19, 1928 in Darlington, South Carolina. She peacefully departed this earthly life on Sunday, March 5, 2023. She was the last surviving child of the late Frank Bacote and the late Lillie Coit Bacote.

She received her education from Round-O School in Darlington, South Carolina. She was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ at an early age by Elder Gilchrist at the Highway Church of Jesus Christ in Darlington, South Carolina. In 1991 she became a member of Progressive Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Inc. in Bishopville, South Carolina.

On February 7, 1948, she was united in marriage to the late Arthur “Sonny” Alford, Sr. To this union eight children were born: Annie Lee Alford, Arthur Alford, Jr., Isaac Alford, Frank Alford, Richard Alford, Allen Alford, Charles Alford, and Walter Alford. She also became a mother to her grandson, Terrance Alford, when his mother Annie Lee Alford died an early death.

Mother Alford worked on the farm for many years. She worked as a sharecropper with her husband before moving off the farm and retiring.

Mother Alford was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, all her siblings: Willie Bacote, Leon Bacote, Frank Bacote, Douglas Brunson, Maybelle Simon, Daisy Shanklin, and Inetha Kennedy; her daughter, Annie Lee Alford; two sons, Arthur Alford, Jr. and Allen Alford; two baby granddaughters; and a daughter-in-law, Virginia Mae Alford.

Mother Marie Alford was a loving, peaceable, kind, and quiet woman who spent her life taking care of her husband before he passed away, her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She also helped raised some of her nieces and nephews. She was a joyful woman who loved to laugh and always had kind words to say to everyone that she met. All who knew her loved her.

Mother Marie Alford leaves to cherish her memories five devoted sons, Isaac Alford, Frank Alford, Richard (Henriettta) Alford, Charles (Candi) Alford, and Walter (Wanda) Alford; a grandson that she raised as her son, Terrance (Sherry) Alford; a daughter-in-law, Amanda Black Alford; and an adopted son, George (Ethel) Gattison; her close friend and classmate, Anna Sue Benton; eighteen grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren; and host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives and friends all whom will miss her dearly.

Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the residence, 2199 Greenfield Road, Darlington.
