in the Church Yard of Bethesda Baptist Church. 

 

He was a military veteran, who served Darlington County School Board, his church, and his family.

He will be greatly missed!!

     Deacon Connell Delaine SGM(r), D.C.B.E. was born June 28, 1947 in Society Hill, SC a son of the late James and Lizzie Jones Delaine.  He departed this life on Friday, October 9, 2020  a McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence, SC after a brief illness.

     He received his formal education in the Darlington County Public School System graduating from Rosenwald High School Class of 1964.

     At an early age, he joined Bethesda Baptist Church where he became a deacon in 2003.  Deacon Delaine loved and served in whatever capacity as needed.

     In 1966, he joined the United States Army which started his 27 years career. Sergeant Major Delaine held a variety of assignments including service with the US Army Aviation Center in Ft. Rucker, AL, US Army Training Center in Ft. Dix, NJ, 1st Air Cavalry Division and Military Assistance Command, Republic of Vietnam, US Army Training Center of Ft. Ord, CA, 8th US Army, Republic of Korea, US Signal School of Ft. Gordon, GA and US Army Combined Arms Center, Ft. Leavenworth, KA.

    Sergeant Major Delaine is the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service and Campaign Medal and various certificates of recognition.

     He was a member of Darlington County Board of Education for more than 19 years.  During those years Connell touched the lives of students, faculties and staff.

     He was a member of the Pee Dee Masonic Lodge #56 where he was Past Master. He was also a member of KOT Chapter J.F. Dixon #56.

     Contributions of his time and himself as a pioneer, leader, a mentor with an unwavering smile he leaves behind a legacy for all who came in contact with him. One of his greatest joys and accomplishments of his life was the arrival of his daughter’s newly sworn police officer, Mavis Delaine.

     Those left to cherish his memory are:  his wife, Dorothy K. Delaine of the home; his beloved daughter, Mavis Delaine of Cleveland, OH; a step-son,  Charles (Vanessa) Dickey; two sisters: Mabel Evans of Manhattan, NY and Geraldine Dixon of Darlington, SC; one brother, Albertus (Louise) Delaine of Hartsville, SC; a sister-in-law, Mary Christine Delaine of Florence, SC; an aunt, Rosena Robinson of Society Hill, SC; two uncles: Monroe (Grace) Jones of Warner Robins, GA and Delone Jones of Waterbury, CT; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

      He was preceded in death by: his sisters: Hattie D. Shepard and Rachel D. Harvey; his brothers: James Delaine, Jr., Collins Delaine, Thurlo “Buster” Delaine and Johnny Delaine.
