Mr. Jerry Elijah Durant

It is with sorrow that the management and staff of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. announces the passing of Mr. Jerry Elijah Durant of Darlington. Mr. Durant expired on Sunday evening, September 15, 2019 at his residence.

Funeral service will be 4:00pm on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at Bethany Baptist Church, Lamar. Burial will follow in Scarborough Grove Cemetery. 

                                      ~Obituary~

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Mr. Jerry Elijah Durant was born in Lamar, South Carolina on July 24, 1948 a son of the late J. T. Durant and Susianna Jackson Durant.  He departed this life on Sunday, September 15, 2019 at his residence.

He received his formal education in the Darlington County Public Schools.

He was gainfully employed at the Egg & I Farm for many years and many other farms until he retired.

He was united in marriage to Mildred Peterkin Durant for over 38 years and this union was blessed with four children; a daughter, Carolyn Peterkin preceded him in death.

Jerry was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend.  He was an out doors man, he loved sports and spending time with his family.  He was a big time Dallas Cowboy and New York Yankee fan.

Those left to cherish his  memory are:  his devoted and loving wife, Mildred P. Durant of the home; three children: Reverend Alex (Wilhelmenia) Peterkin, Derrick (Nicey) Peterkin of both of Florence, SC and Diane Peterkin of Boston, Massachusetts; thirteen grandchildren; Alex Jr., Jazzmin, Quashon, Netera, Taneil, Richie, Tabari, Shadiyah, Stephanie, Dominique, Dajonea, Dejonea and Zytia; five great grandchildren; two siblings: Jimmy Durant (Lula) and Julie (Willie) Pringle both of Lamar, SC; two sisters-in-law: Willie Mae Durant and Lena Rose; two brothers-in-law: Raymond Rose and  Larry Boone; a host nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his siblings: James Durant, Willie Mae Durant, Pearley Durant, Catherine Durant, Ella Boone, Josephine Durant, Joseph Durant, Pearlina Boone; a granddaughter: Alexis L. Peterkin.

Visitation for the Durant family will be held at the residence, 519 Stanley Circle, Darlington.
